Betty,
Any relation to a Jimmy Stokes from Houston, once married to Thelma
Brothers of Slayden, Gonzales County, Texas?
There is a ton of information on the families connected to John Carnes
of Mendham--a three volume set: Jersey Settlers of Adams County Mississippi.
That's where I got my information about Samuel Swazey Carnes being
(apparently) named after his great-great uncle. S.S. Carnes and his wife came down to
Mississippi from the Mendham area in New Jersey and got land 1799/1800. His
daddy was this John Carnes. I haven't seen any connections between them and the
Wells Carnes people.
But maybe Thomas Petters Carnes was in some way related to John Carnes
of Mendham back in New Jersey? All I know about John Carnes are his
descendants--don't know anything about possible siblings. Do you know what dates they
got to Hinds County?
The giant 3 volume Jersey Settlers book also mentions a Margaret Carnes
that married the Ogden who set up the arrangement for the colony near
Natchez--I think she was a widow when he married her. Would have to look at my
notes to remember the dates, but the Swazey brothers went down to the Natchez
area in 1774.
John Carnes' wife was the granddaughter of Swazey brothers's oldest
sister. And he was Presbyterian--collected the tithes at the church in Mendham.
I read a lot of history books on Southold (including one that was
written in 1840) and looked at old maps--saw names on plots owned by the Swazey
ancestors on the old city directory kinds of maps--but I never saw any Carnes
mentioned at all.
There are also Carnes in Boston (ancestors of Tennessee Williams), but I
don't know of any connections with John.

These Carnes descendants were also in Hinds Co., Mississippi before moving
to Texas. I am interested in this because my Wells Carnes and family were
also in Hinds Co., Mississippi about the same time. His son, William Redwine
Carnes moved to Texas about 1838.
We first find Wells [born about 1778]in Franklin Co., GA. Then through
Alabama to Mississippi. The Samuel Swazey Carnes line possibly comes from
the same general location as Thomas Petters Carnes. Carnesville, Georgia was
named for him. He is said to have come from Maryland and New Jersey.
Most of what I have is Samuel Swazey descendants. They do go a bit more than
4 generations from John. I'll share if you have any interest.
I'm wondering if these lines connect at any point further back.

Does anybody know anything about John Carnes 1735-1891, of Mendham, New
Jersey who married Penelope Coleman March 21, 1755 in New Jersey?
The Colemans and others (Swazeys, etc.) came to New Jersey from
Southold, Long Island. The mormons have John Carnes as also being born in
Southold,
but I think somebody may have just been guessing that.
Their children:
William
Sarah Carnes Day
Penelope Carnes Thompson
Ephraim
Samuel Swazey Carnes.
I descend from Samuel Swazey Carnes, who later joined the colony in Adams
County, Mississippi founded by his great uncles, the reverends Samuel and
Richard Swazey.

I am interested in the additional information that you have. I have John and
his wife and their son Samuel Swazey Carnes. From there, I have a good bit
of information. Some I got from a descendant. It concentrates on the
Descendants of Samuel Swazey.
I know there are 2 different lines, but because it is possible that our
family came from the same locations, and they traveled much the same path,
it is possible that they might connect somewhere earlier.
I'll send you a descendant list and if you can add anything, I would
appreciate it.
