Jim,
Thank you for your information. I am glad that I continued with my second
note about the Carnes men. I do not have a Richard or Wilburn Carnes in
my database but I am glad that I possibly have a two additional brothers to
add to my information. I will check out the internet as you have suggested.
When my husband and I took our second trip to the SE states in 2001 we
stopped by Cherokee, NC again and I left a hard copy of the Killion Family
Tree, my mother's fathers family with the folks at the office there that
handles family trees. I did not think about my mother's mothers side of family
but I now wish I had done so. Anyway, that office wrote me a letter about
a month later and said that this particular Killion family from the
information that I gave them, which was a lot, was not related to any Cherokee in
their database.
I will check out the FamilyTreeDNA database for the name of CARNES and see
if there are any males listed.
I guess in your case and mine that the Carnes men went their different
ways for whatever reason.
I am recovering from a total left knee replacement done on 3/30 so I am
not at the computer for a long time as I get stiff and have to keep up with
my exercises. I am doing just fine with the healing process and will
probably have an additional four weeks of physical therapy.
I took a hard fall some years ago on my knee and after two arthoscopic
surgeries the doctor said replacement is the answer. I am retired from
ExxonMobil so my husband is wearing his nurse's cap for a few more weeks, ha.
I will get back in touch with you this week sometime as this is really an
interesting turn of events finding some more Carnes folks out there.
Regards
Carolyn Cooksey Maxey
p.s. I have 34 pages of my FamilyTreeMaker CARNES FAMILY TREE if you
would be interested in having this for you information. I will not charge you.
This information is in single pages so you can put it into a manual form
as in a folder so I can add to the information when I need to. Send me
your address and I will snail mail it to you as that is the way that I choose
to handle this.

Carolyn,
I am descended from Richard Carnes b. NJ 1774, d. aft 1850 Hart County
(formerly part of Franklin county) GA. Supposedly, my Richard and your
Wells G. were brothers. But I have seen no proof. Alleged parents are
shown
as Peter Carnes b. 1736, Perth Amboy, Middlexex, NJ. Lots of info on this
when you search the internet. Peter Carnes had quite an interesting
history
However, there is conflicting information as to Peter's birth year. Last
spring (2009) I visited his restored gravesite in Augusta, GA. The
inscription states he died 23 Jul 1794 at age 46. That puts his birth year
at 1748 or so. But Peter's alleged first wife is Mary Eden Briscoe, b. in
St. Mary's County, MD in about 1773. That date doesn't work at all. Could
be just plain error.
As for Cherokee Indian ancestry, I've seen quite a bit of speculation.
I've
got a copy of the Guoin-Miller Eastern Cherokee Application Index from
1909.
There are about 22 Carnes names in the index. I got a copy of the
application from Wilburn Wells Carnes, from NARA, which was denied.
Wilburn
Wells, was a brother of your William Redwine. There are old stories I have
read from other Carnes researchers about my ancestor, Richard Carnes being
of Indian blood. Even if he did have Indian blood, it would probably not
have been Cherokee, as our Carnes all emanated from NJ/MD.

This is Carolyn Maxey again from Houston,
All that I can tell you about my family is that I do not have a
Christopher Carnes or Ann Thomas or Reason Carnes in my Carnes database. I
have
heard a story about both my mother's parents that my grandfather Killion
and
grandmother Carnes were part Cherokee Indian. After my doing the
FamilyTree
DNA first and second mutation test I called these folks in Houston and
told
them about what I had heard about the Cherokee story and their reply was
that I do not have any Indian blood in my DNA. I called and talked to
several people at the DNA place several times and I heard the same story
twice.
My mtDNA test results indicates that I am of strictly European DNA
lineage, specifically Eastern European DNA lineage. .
I know that all of this is Greek to you as it is for most everyone until
you get into any DNA program. The program that I mentioned to you in my
first message explains all of that information.
I do not have any male Carnes men alive, as far as I know, so unless I run
across a live male relative I will not have any answers for that side of
the family.
I can tell you that I can go back as far as Wells G. Carnes, born 1790 and
died before 27Nov1838. He was married to Elizabeth Linna Lott, born 1774
in Franklin, GA and married before 1813. Then came William Redwine Carnes,
1813-1895, Jasper N. Carnes , 1839-1883, Joseph Abdel Carnes, 1859-1931
and then my grandmother, 1885-1962.
The best thing to do about anyone related to Ann Thomas would be to have a
female on that side of her family do the FamilyTreeDNA test and see what
that tells you. This may be an impossible task finding someone but I would
suggest that because that was the only way that you will find out if any
Cherokee exists. Some old stories get handed down many times that you
would
think that is the truth but the DNA test tells the truth.
I hope that I have not bored you with my chatter but just thought I would
cover all of my bases. Frankly, it was good to see a person requesting
info about a Carnes.
Good luck with your search.
