...from NC>SC>GA and beyond.
I have traced my direct line - by myself - copying no one else's work.
My line begins with Nancy Minerva CARNES who m: Jacob Silas BURTON, both
born GA and died in OK. Nancy was the d/o Andrew Jackson CARNES &
Hannah RUSSELL. A. J. was the s/o Ruth CARNES. He and his six siblings
were said to have been fathered by a Cherokee indian by the name of
VINCENT. I am assuming his last name was VINCENT.
Ruth CARNES was the dau. of Hubbard CARNES and Marianne/Polly CALLAHAN.
Ruth, in the fall of her years, married Lemuel WILKERSON and had a
couple of other children.
I suspect Hubbard's father was James, but have no PROOF. I have no idea
where Hubbard CARNES was born. But I do know he was found in the 1790
Stokes Co., NC census before showing up in Greenville Co., SC in 1800.
Further history on the family of Hubbard & Marianne CARNES can be found
in the "rejected" applications of the Guion MILLER roll. That document
tells us that Polly was a Cherokee half-breed.
There is so much conflicting but exact information on Worldconnect and
other sites (in every line). I would really like to see more proof/work
go into these families so that we all have access to correct information.
For 35 years, my goal has been to move my lines back to the immigrant,
so for many of the families, the children are "iffy". Very often I have
not notated "sources". I've got to do better.
Please let me know if I can share any more information with you to help
you with your CARNES lines. We have great "cousins" who are good
researchers.
