Greetings to you all. I have been receiving your CARNES Family messages
with much interest. Mainly due to the close similarity of spellings to our
name. I have been watching for some one connection to my Karnes name but
have yet to see one.
To bring you up to speed. My father's family came from Bedford Co. VA.
and dates back to there in 1760. The KARNES spelling was corrupted from
original spelling of
KERNS. Kerns is a Germanic name and the various spellings came about by
Clerks of Courts and Census Takers using phonics. Many of the people back
then spoke the name in different ways and the "hearer" heard it in
different ways so the same name came to various spellings.
I have found that our names seem to vary according geographic
locations. Two examples are Eastern Pennsylvania pronounce Karnes like
Karens and people in Indiana had the spellings Kearns. This spelling
(Kearns) seems to be founded in
Ireland.
I would like to hear from any of you who may know of "Roots" that go
back to Virginia and especially Bedford Co. VA.
I wish you all the Happiest of hunting in the New Year.
Bob
