Gerre,
Thanks. I think I have heard of that connection--would have to check
my notes, but Richard sounds familiar. But no Richards identified in my
line.
Also, there seem to have been Carnes in New Haven, Connecticut in the
1600's. The people who colonized Southold, Long Island in 1640 (from
whence my John Carnes was almost certainly NOT) came to Long Island from
New Haven and stayed connected politically to Connecticut.
Do you know anything about the New Haven Carnes?

Barbara Jo, there are those who have claimed a Richard CARNES (from NJ
to GA). I've not followed the line though.

Have seen so-called "information" posted that my Carnes ancestor
married
in
Southold, Long Island. Seriously doubted that and made a trip to
Southold,
where archivist also seriously doubts it. Wanted to find out what
the
poster based that on. Post was made by a person with whom I had
correspondence
in the past, but now does not respond to letters or attempted

Am
guessing he either died or has become incapacitated. Meanwhile, that
data
sits online, with no source given, except for his name.
Has anybody on the list ever heard of David Cummins of Houston,
Texas?
He was the source.
This is my same NJ>MIss>La line; not your NC>SC>Ga line.
Not my line so far as I know, but haven't yet found actual
birthplace,
parents, etc. of John Carnes b 1735 d after 1801(will) Mendham, NJ.
There
could be a common root.
John Carnes married Penelope Coleman (who was born in Southold,
Long
Island) March 21, 1755.
Have asked about him before on the list. Does anybody now have
information on him?

Thank you for speaking up about the online trees. I thought I was
alone in
thinking that the trees have turned into garbage. Most of the owners
copy
unproven and mistaken information from other trees. They don't
seem
to
care
if they spread false information. I guess it makes them look
important to
have a tree online. How sad, because it could have been a great
thing
to
be
able to share trees and save other people time and money. I am not
talking
about just a few trees, I am talking about most of them.
Online trees could still be a great thing if there was a way to
insist
that
people give sources. I mean sources not another online family tree. I
realize that people who copy online trees will not take the time to
follow
up on sources, but some of us do.
I have always been very willing to share with others, but now it is
easier
for them to copy an online tree, false or not. They seem to believe
them
more, because they are "in print."
I don't know how to solve this problem, but I think awareness might
help.
