Looking at the Mississippi Territorial Papers of 1800 -- many names
signed to petitions to the government. Among the names, Samuel Swazey
Carnes who had moved to the Natchez area about 1799 with his wife,
Elizabeth McCurry/McCourry/McQuarrie and children, including son, John
Carnes 1792-1850. There is also a John Carnes' signature among the lists. I
presume that signature surely cannot be son, John. He was only 8 years old
in 1800.
The Southeast Territory was colonized in 1774 by Samuel Swazey Carnes'
great uncles, Samuel and Richard Swazey.
Did Samuel S. Carnes father, JOHN CARNES of Mendham, also go to the
Mississippi Territory? He wrote his will in 1801; was, therefore, still
alive in 1800.
Or did they accept signatures of 8 year old boys on petitions to
Congress?
