CONNECTION TO THE FAMILY.....
Carnes, Talton A., age 94, of Winfield, AL, died Wednesday, December 13,
2000, in Birmingham. He and his wife of 66 years, Lillian Granade Carnes,
lived in Winfield from 1945 until 1999, when they moved to Chateau Vestavia
in Birmingham. Mr. Carnes was born November 24, 1906, near Hamilton. He is
survived by his wife, Lillian; son, Jimmie T. Carnes, Montgomery; daughters,
Mary Carolyn (Ken) Sullivan and Brenda C. Carroll, Hoover; sisters, Willer
Mae Holley, Montevallo; Ivie Cantrell, Hamilton; grandchildren, Mark
Carroll, Hoover; Jayne Sullivan Bishop, Maylene; Kenda Sullivan Johnson,
Huntsville; Kristen Carnes Bratten, Atlanta; Jay Talton Carnes, Ft. Collins,
CO; and seven great grandchildren. Mr. Carnes graduated from the State
Secondary Agricultural High School (now Hamilton High School) in 1926, and
from Auburn University in 1931 with a BS in Agricultural Education. He was
employed with the Alabama Extension Service and the U.S. Department of
Agriculture Soil Conservation Service until 1944. From 1945 to 1966 he owned
T.A. Carnes Hardware in Winfield. He then worked as a real estate broker,
and was elected Mayor of Winfield in 1968. From 1979-1998, he was involved
in timber development in Marion County, known as "Private Acres", and in
1981 received an award for Outstanding management of a Treasure Forest from
the Alabama Forestry Commission. Mr. Carnes was active in the First United
Methodist Church of Winfield and the Lion's Club, and served on the Winfield
City Schools Board of Education. Funeral services will be held at the First
United Methodist Church of Winfield, Saturday, December 16, at 1:00pm.
Visitation will be one hour prior to the service and following at the
church. Burial in Winfield City Cemetery with Miles Funeral Home of Winfield
directing.
