Gerre,
These Carnes are Choctaw. Melvina was 1/2 and my father-in-law was an
original Enrollee on the Dawes. My husband is 1/8. My father-in-laws
parents both died within two weeks of each other in 1901. I sent for and
received Melvina's enrollment packet but, there was very little in it.
Henry died before the closing of the Dawes so, he was stricken from the
rolls too. I haven't sent for his packet yet. I ordered some books from
Bryan County and find quite a bit on Harris but nothing so far on John.
In the Jacks Fork 1885 Census there are several Carnes listed .Julius,
Ellis , Piety, Harris, Lizzie,Amanda, Rebecca. In the Blue County(BRyan
County) There is Harris (I believe this to be the same Harris as listed
on the Jacks Fork Census as this was about the time of the divorce from
Piety) John , Andrew..Then in his wills, Harris mentions Anderson
Carnes and one of the wills is witnessed by a Daniel A Carnes. In LDS
there is an entry that Harris Carnes was born in Jacks Fork
County,Indian Territory abt. 1830.
On the Dawes :
Andrew J Carnes -25-Full CC#3866 RL# 10889
Odee -3- M-1/2 " 10891
Charles -5- M-1/2 " 10890
Myrtle -23-F- IW "
Julius V Carnes-20-M-Full- CC# " 719
Molsie -15-F-Full " 720
Evangeline -9-F-Full " 721
Elsie -18-F-Full " 722
Someone once sent me a print-out from a book about leading figures in
Indian Territory and it stated that Ellis Carnes was the son of Harris
Carnes and it named some of his children and it matches the ones listed
on the Dawes Roll.
There is another Ellis Carnes listed on the Dawes as 28 years old too.
There is an Anderson Carnes 23 years old ,living with a Sallie Lewis and
family. Sallie is 43 so, I assume it is his mother.
Maybe this info. will help someone. Thanks for responding Gerre. I have a
Native American CD if anyone needs a look-up. Billie
