[Dr. SAMUEL CARNE was known to travel back and forth between England and
South Carolina. He was a Loyalist doctor, apothecary, shop-keeper, and
plantation owner who eventually stayed in England, apparently leaving
his wife, CATHERINE BOND, and son SAMUEL CHARLES CARNE, behind. He
owned lots in Charleston, also, and sold many of them off; today the
lots surround what is Orange Street in Charleston.]
From the SC Gazette, October 9, 1762:
"To be SOLD, at public vendue, on Wednesday the 10th day of November, at
the subscriber's plantation in Christ-Church parish, The said
plantation, containing near 1000 acres of land, good for indico, corn,
etc. with soome rice land, together with the house, stills, vatts,
----houses, barn, and other out-houses.
"The agreeable healthy situation of this place is too well known to need
any pompous description, and the present possessor of it is so well
satisfied of the many profitable advantages that may be made of the
distillery; and also of the land, by sawing, lime burning, or raising
stock, etc. for the Charles-Town market that was he not about to leave
the province, no money should tempt him to part with it.
"At the same time and place will be sold, three setts of indigo vats,
with a lime vat large enough to supply ten lotts. A parcel of healthy
valuable young negroes, amongst which is one pair of sawyers, and some
sensible boys and young wenches. A small stock of young cattle, about
40 head of sheep, a large parcel of goats, household furniture, a riding
chair and draught horses, one S-oared canow, and a smaller one, sundry
plantation tools, and utensils for the distillery, with many other
articles too tedious to enumerate. The conditions of the sale, cash or
bils of exchange.
"Any person inclinable to purchase the land before the day of sale, may
treat with the subscriber in Charles-Town.
SAMUEL CARNE"
