Of course as soon I wrote that our family consistently spelled the name
as CARNE, I looked again at the 1790 and 1800 census records for SC and
note the following for Charleston District:
1790:
St. Phillips and St. Michael's Parish
JOHN CARNES 2 free white males over 16 3 free white females 7 slaves
SUSANAH CARNS 2 free WM under 16, 3 females, 14 slaves
I don't know if these are related to my family or not...
And in 1800:
SUSANNA CARNES 1 free white male 10-16 1 FWF 26-45 6 slaves
THOMAS W. CARNES 1 FWM 16-26 1 FWF under 10 3 FWF 16-26 14 slaves
JOHN CARN 1 FWM over 45 1 FWF 16-26 2 slaves
SAMUEL CARNE 1 FWM under 10 1 FWM " ; 1 FWF 16-26; 1 FWF 26 - 45
I don't know who SUSANNA was, as all three CARNE males that I believe to
be in my line are accounted for [living], so I don't know who she was
the widow of.
