Subject: lost Carnes's
Kim - I read your message on GenForum just a bit ago. I noticed that you went back to
Joseph Carnes and Comfort Cash Carnes. From there forward you show some of their
descendants. Do you, by any chance, have a clue as to whether Joseph Carnes had any
brothers or sisters? I highly suspect that my line of Carnes's forks off from one of
his brothers, but no one has any of that information (this is called grabbing at straws).
Since Joseph and Comfort were rather successful and prosperous, their line is well
documented. My line wasn't very prosperous, and certainly not well documented.
I can go back to James Carnes marrying Dorcas Carney in 1803 in SC. On the Dorcas
Carney line I can go back several more generations, but I have found absolutely nothing on
James. Nothing. However, something tells me that he may very well have been a brother of
this Joseph Carnes. Only thing I'm going on is intuition, and that their birth dates
would have been close. This James Carnes was married to Dorcas long enough to have 3
children - Nancy, Eli and Shem (my ggggrandfather) - then served in the War of 1812,
returned, married another woman, had a number of other children, and disavowed himself of
his original children per his war records. I also found information showing that, from
1820 to 1822 a James (virtually certain it was THIS James) sold all his land to, among
others, Hubbard Carnes. Then he disappeared. What this tells me is something happened
after he returned from the War of 1812.
Does any of this ring any bells? Have you come across any mention of any other
Carnes's in the late 1700's?
Sadly, while the Carnes's who are doing research on the internet are sharing all the
information they have with everyone, the fact is that there aren't that many
Carnes's running around out here, and very few of us are interested in tracking down
our ancestors. Consequently, we have to dig just a bit deeper than everyone else.
I'll let you go. Have to sharpen my shovel.
Stephen
