Subject: [VERMONT-L] CHENEY
Sue - here is what there is on Cheney.
"LUCIUS I. CHENEY is a familiar figure in East Barre and although he is 72
years old he is one of the most helpful, progressive and public spirited
of
its citizens. He is a native of Washington, Vermont and about 33
years
ago
moved to Carnes Mill because he thought it had better educational
advantages for his children. He was a moderately prosperous farmer and
owned what had been the Clark Farm of 140 acres.
He has built several houses, gave the site on which the Congregational
Church was built and was a liberal contributor of time and money in its
erection. he takes laudable pride in the growing village which he has
done
so much to establish. He built and lived in the house now owned by
Mrs.
Edna Liese."
"HARLAN I. CHENEY" was the only son of Lucius Cheney and was born in
Carnes
Mill in 1866. He assisted his father in farming, owned a meat
business in
what is now Washburn's barber shop and later entered the granite industry.
He had 4 daughters and one son. In addition to quarrying he built several
houses and was a joint owner in 37 available village lots. He has borne a
full share in the development of the town and a prosperous future is
predicted for both." He built and lived in the home occupied now by Brent
Whitcomb. mrs. Beulah Btes Farrar of Barre is a descendant of the Cheney
family.

According to "The Barre Enterprise" printed in 1897, iin the account
written of Lucius Cheney, it states that Mr. and Mrs. Cheney came from
Washington, Vermont to Carnes Mills and bought the Clark farm of 140
acres.
His reason for moving was that the village of Carnes Mills offered
better
educational advantages as well as nearness to the school for his four
daughters and one son. Also a note that a Mrs. Beulah Bates Farrar
reported that her mother - Cora Cheney Bates - attended this school.
