PS. My Direct Lineage back to 1760 on request.
Will the Real Michael Kerns, Please Stand Up?
Bedford, Botetourt and Monongalia Counties, Va.
1730-1898
(#1) Michael Kerns (Sr.) Born (probably) in Pennsylvania cr; 1730 and died
in 1807 in Bedford Co., Va. ( See Will recorded in Bedford Co. Va. Court
House). This Michael is traditionally believed to be the first born of
Nicholas Kerns, who entered this Country Oct. 2, 1727. Nicholas Kerns was
born cr; 1700 (in Germany ?) and died cr; 1734 to 1745 . Michael Kerns was
the older brother of George Kerns who was born, cr; 1733, d. 1765 in
Bedford Co. Va. No other children are known.
Their mother ( believed to be Elizabeth ) remarried to Matthew
Shaup/Shoup, a widower with six children of his own. They are believed to
have lived in Lancaster County, Pa. until Matthew removed his large family
to Augusta/Rockingham Co. Va. sometime between 1745 and 1749. Matthew Shaup
died about a year later and named his sons-in-law (stepsons) Michael and
George Carns (Kerns) in his Will
( Matthew Shaups Will on file in the Augusta Co. Court House ) to inherit
their fathers Estate(?), to the full extent of the Bonds (?) in 1750.
They lived in Augusta/Rockingham County somewhere between Mcgatheysville
and Elkton, Va. on Matthews farm until they came of age (21). It is
believed Michael and George Kerns moved to Lunenburg/Bedford Co. sometime
before 1760 to find and settle on lands.
The first records of Michael and George Kerns in Bedford are their
purchase of land on the southeastern slopes of the Peaks of Otter in
1760.
( Michael 27/9/1760, Deed Book #1, p. 340, for 165 acres ). ( George
28/2/1764, Deed Book #2, pg 302, for 400 acres ).
It is believed that Michael Kerns married Elizabeth (maiden name unknown).
Elizabeth (nee. ????) may have been Michael Kerns (of Bedford Co.) only
wife.
( A Marriage permission note signed by Elizabeth Kerns is on file in the
Bedford Co. Court House for Barbara Kerns in January 22, 1787). ( A copy
of this note is in my possession).
There is a theory is that Catherine Shaver was the wife of Michael Kerns in
Botetourt County.
Michael Kerns (Sr) of Bedford fathered 14 children, 8 boys and 6 girls. (
See research of F. Landis Weaver, Blue Springs, Mo. on file in the Bedford
Co. Museum and Genealogical Society, Bedford City, Va. ).
(George Kerns (Sr) to my knowledge, fathered only one boy, George (Jr) ,
who was probably born cr; 1765 just before or just after his fathers
death). ( George [Jr.] married Barbara Kerns a daughter of Michael (Sr.)
Jan. 22, 1787. see Marriage Records Bedford Co. Court House ).
Michael Kerns Sr. owned hundreds of acres in Bedford Co. (see F. Landis
Weavers research file and Survey Re-creations in Bedford Co. Museum and
Genealogical Society ), and several thousand acres in
Kanawha/Montgomery/Mason Co. Va. in what now West Virginia. (Copies of
records are in my possession and hundreds of acres in Kentucky. (see
Michaels Will of 1803, on file in Bedford Co. Court House).
(1)
(Michaels cont.)
(#2.) Michael Kerns/Karns (Jr.) Third child and second son of Michael
Kerns,
born 9/23/1770 in Bedford Co. married Mary Polly Bales of York Co. Pa.
They had 11 children, five boys and six girls. Michael Jr. and Polly
removed after 1825 to Mercer Co. (West) Virginia and later settled in
Buchanan Co. Mo. Michael died there on 9/19/1847 four days short of 77
years. ( See research and history of descendant F. Landis Weaver in the
Bedford Co. Museum and Genealogical Society).
(#3) Michael Kerns (Sr.) This Michael Kerns is traditionally believed to
be born in Holland cr; 1740 and came to this Country sometime between 1755
and 1764 ( the date and name of the ship are yet to be found ). He
met and married a widow in 1765 her name was Susannah Weatherholt. (She
already had a young son, Jacob and two daughters, by Johan Jacob
Weatherholt who was killed by Indians a short time before. Michael Kerns
and Susannah had four known children two boys and two girls.
Historically recorded that Michael Kerns Sr. settled in Monongalia
County, Va. (later W Va.) in 1770 where he, according to the Law received
two Land Grants, one for 215 acres and later one for 400 acres. He built a
cabin and raised a corn crop. He brought his young family to stay in 1772.
There, in 1774, he built a Fort for protection, he was very industrious
and started several businesses including boatyard, two gristmills, a dam
and a covered bridge, two sawmills and finally a small church for all
denominations to use. He was appointed one of the planners and overseers of
how Morgans-Town, W Va. was to be built. He purchased several lots in that
new Town and later donated one of his lots (#124) for the building of a
school. (See The History of Monongalia County by Samuel T. Wiley, 5
Volumes and. The History and Making of Morgantown by James M. Callahan,
1 Volume, The Monongalia Story by Earl L. Core, 5 Volumes. The
Early History of Western Pennsylvania and of the West by I. Daniel Rupp
).
Michael Kerns Sr. served in the Revolutionary War at Fort Pitt and was
deeply involved in the development of the Monongalia County and
Morgans-Town..
(The Monongalia County, (West) Virginia, Records of District, Superior and
County Courts, 7 volumes). Records transcribed by Melba Pender Zinn lists
well over 100 entries between 1776 and 1819, these records show how
involved he was with the politics of those long ago days.
Michaels first wife, Susannah, died sometime after 1785. He remarried,
again to another widow, a Mrs. Barbara Riffle of Fayette Co. Pa. (Core Vol
3, page 97) .They did not have children.
In 1816, Michael Kerns Sr. sold most all of his property and businesses to
a John Rogers and Zadoc Walker for $13,000 dollars. (Core Vol 2, pg. 129).
It is officially recorded that Michael Kerns Sr. died July 10, 1833 in
Morgantown, Va. His estimated age was over 93 years old. He is buried near
the old Fairgrounds. There is a small Memorial Marker in Morgantown
dedicated to him in 1927 by the D.A.R. ( A copy of a newspaper picture is
in my possession).
(2)
(Michaels cont.)
Many of his descendants, whos names are still being researched by me
remained in Monongalia County, Va. while others spread into Kentucky,
Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, Tennessee and into the West.
(#4) Michael Kerns Jr. Second child and first son of Michael Kerns Sr. of
Monongalia County, (West) Va. was born cr; 1768. He and his older sister,
Christiana were probably born in Greensburg, Westmoreland Co. Pa. before
their father removed them to Monongalia Co. Va. to settle on a 215 acres
Land Grant in 1770/1772, at the mouth of Deckers Creek on the Monongahela
River. Their two other children were younger brother, John J. and sister,
Susan were born later in Monongalia Co.
Michael Jr. married Catherine Criss about 1795. They had seven children
five boys and two girls. There is only one record of Michael Jr. acquiring
one tract of land in 1796, (Zinn Vol 1, pg. 164) so I assume he probably
only farmed enough land to feed his own household family. Little is known
of this Michael Jr. He probably worked in his father Michael Sr.s.
businesses, most of his life. One of his claims to fame was that he was
the father of James Kerns a well known Wagon maker in Morgantown. Michael
Jr. owned a Ordinary/Tavern in 1832. (Noted in Callahan p.117 and Cores
Vol. 3 pg. 86). Michael Jr. fathered Michael lll, who was noted as being
the keeper of a house of private entertainment in 1836. (Core Vol 3,
p.138. Michael lll is not involved in our story). It was also recorded
Michael Kerns Jr. died later in 1833 a few months after his father death in
July of that year.
(# 5) Michael Kerns/Karnes Sr. was born a son of George and Barbara
(Kerns) Kerns in 1789/1791 in Bedford Co. He married Catherine Welch who
had a young son James (born abt. 1808). ( See research of F. Landis
Weaver, Bedford Museum). Michael and Catherine Kerns/Karnes had 8 children,
6 sons and 2 daughters.
( Ref. Marriage Records of Bedford Co. 1786-1900 and Census Records of
1820,1830 and 1840, plus personal research of descendant Robert E. (Bob)
Karnes in Bedford Co. Museum and Genealogical Society).
(Ed. Note. All childrens marriages of Michael and Catherine (Welch)
Kerns/Karnes are listed in the Marriage Records of Bedford Co., except
Jesse [last born] died unmarried in Dec. 1854 of Typhoid Fever ). Michael
Kerns/Karnes (Sr.) died Dec. 24, 1851. Catherine and son, Jesse, died
within 9 days of each in Dec.., 1854. Michael Kerns/Karnes Sr. named one of
his sons Michael Miller Karnes (Jr.) born 1828, married Sarah Arrington in
1850, died 1898.
(#6) Michael Kerns ( Botetourt Co. Va. & Knox Co. Tn ) This Michaels
antecedents are still a mystery. The most recent discoveries seem to prove
that this Michael was the father of the twins, Jacob and George Kerns, who
are buried together with their wives in the Karnes Cemetery in Low Moor,
Va. seem to bare that out. Some of the facts I have are his purchase
of 443 acres in western Bedford Co. in 1794 and sold it shortly after 1800.
( See Deed Book #9, p.347, F. Landis Weavers 1995 Survey Re-creation,
Blue Springs, Mo. in Bedford Co. Museum ). He moved westward into
Tennessee in 1804/05 where he settled with his family for the rest of his
life.
(3)
(Michaels cont).
His birthday is cr; 1740 and his birthplace is not yet known but was
probably in Augusta Co, Va. His wifes name was Catherine (probably
Shaver?).
( Bedford Deed Bk. 11, pg 1147).
I have copies of Indentures (Contracts) Michael made in 1804 with his
sons, George and Jacob. They were agreements that, with the gift of Land
of120 acres along with some other personal (moveable) property. They,
George & Jacob, would not claim or attempt to claim any inheritance from
their fathers Estate.
(Registered in Deed Bk.8, pgs.412 &420, May 5 & May 11, 1804.
Fincastle, Botetourt Co)
This Michael Kerns moved to Bedford Co. sometime before 1794 where he
purchased Land in western Bedford Co. mentioned above. He owned this land
for a number of years then sold it and moved away.
Michael Kerns of Botetourt County age might be figured based on the fact
that he had the known sons, George & Jacob, and was able to transfer the
land by Contract in Botetourt Co. His son, George ( and wife Betty) and
Jacob (and wife Betsy) must have been over 21 years of age and Michael
probably was well beyond 50 years of age in 1797. So, my guess is he was,
at least, 50 years old, and probably older. His Birth date being between
1740 and 1750. His forefathers might be any one of a number of known Kerns
men in Augusta and Botetourt Co.s. in the early to mid 1700s.
I suspect that this Michael could be a son of Abraham Kerns (age 28),
who, arrived with his wife Katherine (age 22) and his mother Elizabeth (age
55) in America in 1731. There is no proof of this only that the dates seem
to match.
This is not all there is to tell in separating the Michael Kerns in
Virginia between 1730 and 1898. I realize there were probably other
Michaels but these seem to be the six Michael Kerns most people are
interested in and become confused about.
He died before1814 based on records in the Knox Co. TN. Archives Will
Books.
(Update) On a recent trip (Aug. 1998) to Greensburg, Westmoreland Co. PA.
a Will was Recorded in the Court House Clerks Office in Will Book #1, ( pg
uncopied ) but was dated 1799, it was the oldest recorded Kerns/Karnes
entry. It was of a Mathias Kerns leaving his Estate in the hands of his
father, Michael Kerns. This Michael Kerns, with his age estimated and
computed backward from his sons projected age of beng at least 21 to 25
years of age, puts Michaels age at 40 - 50 years of age. This puts his
birthday @ cr; 1750. Adding him to our List of Michaels. Whether he will
have an impact on the Kerns/Karnes Histories is not known, at this time.

I have some Carnes family information that I couldn't attach to anyone in my
database, so I have started a CarnesRe for Research database. From time to
time,
I bring it up to date.
My Carnes line is:
Wells (b. abt 1778) and Linna Carnes from Franklin Co., GA to AL to Hinds
Co.,
MS.
Rev. Wm. Redwine Carnes (born 1813) Mississipi Territory (Alabama) to Hinds
Co.,
MS to Nacogdoches Co. TX.
Married Elvira Brewer. They were married in Hinds Co., MS before
coming to Texas.
Rev. Wm. Franklin Carnes, born in Texas in 1845. Married Louisa Ann
Blackburn,
dau of James Blackburn and Lizine Elizabeth Grayson. Their daughter was my
grandmother, Annie Carnes who married John B. Muckleroy in Nacogdoches Co
I only meant to say that I have a little information on the Samuel Swazey
Carnes
line (NJ to Hinds Co., MS) and a little on the James Carnes m. Polly Slavin
line
from Blount Co., AL. Some on the Thomas Petters Carnes line. Also a good bit
on
the Richard Carnes line of Hart Co., GA. We think he is a brother to our
Wells
Carnes, but that is just an educated guess at this point. He named a son
Wells
and lived in a county carved out of Franklin Co., GA and is about the right
age.
Also some other Carnes lines. If someone wants a gedcom of one of my "other"
lines, I'll be glad to send it. Use as a clue, not as definite. I don't have
everything I have typed in there of course. Everyone gets bits and pieces.

William moved to Iowa and John moved to MO..[I'am trying to find proof that
my John R. Carnes is Henry's son John] I'am sure that it is my line since the

The Carnes sure did like the name's John & William!!
Lovey
Thomas -
Nice to hear from a potential "nth" cousin!
The earliest Carnes ancestor my family knows of is John Carnes who was born
in Lee County around 1775. He married Rose Smiley from Ireland and their
fourth child was Thomas Moore Carnes, b 1806. He married Ann Wynn Peery
after moving to Grundy County, MO, and their second son was Robert Peery
Carnes. Robert married Elizabeth Ann Norris who was his second cousin
because their grandmothers were sisters. They had four children but in 1871
he died from a chronic condition caused by Injury in the Civil War.
There is a family story about how in one battle during the Civil War, he
lay on his stomach in the battlefield pretending to be dead, holding a
pistol in each hand ready to fire just in case. When I was a child growing
up in the Cold War era of the fifties I had a secret plan that if there was
a war, with those Soviets marching down our street, I would lie down and
pretend to be dead to save myself. It was pretty funny to hear about a
great-greatgrandfather who did just that.
Anyway, he and Elizabeth had 3 sons and a daughter. Son #2 was my
great-grandfather. They all finished growing up in Minnesota where they and
their mother accompanied Elizabeth's father, Jewett Norris, who was quite
prominent in Grundy County. In Minnesota they all did quite well. Two of
Elizabeth's grandsons, Norris Carnes and my grandfather, James Jewett
Carnes, were especially accomplished. Norris Carnes was very active in many
State activities and lived on Summit Avenue in St. Paul (the pinacle of
society, ya see). He may still be alive but would be over 100 years old.
There is a street in the Minnesota Fairgrounds in St. Paul named after him
- Carnes Avenue.
My grandfather went to West Point and had a prominent military career. He
become Military Governor of Trieste in Italy when the Allies drove Hitler
out and also head of the transportation system rebuilding project in Italy
during the same time period. He worked directly with Eisenhower and Omar
Bradley. He also invented the Kellogg's snack pack boxes (so soldiers in
the trenches in WW1 could have cereal) and the disk brake used on Ford cars
and trucks.
Well, there you go! I wish I knew who came before John Carnes born in 1775.
Haven't been able to determine that.
(Ms.) Terry Carnes
Who was the John P. Carnes who received land in Cherokee Co., AL. He lived in
the household of Norman McDuffie for the 1850, 1860, and 1870 censuses. We
know that Norman's grandmother was Orpha Carnes Chappelear. Who was John P.
Carnes.

Genealogies of Sparta IL" it was compiled by Mrs. Frank Torrens and her
daughter Louise M. Torrens in 1956. It is in the Salt Lake City Family
History Library there US/CAN 997.392/S1 D2t Call # 1033992 CAIRNES pg.
304-308 CAIRNS are listed in a descendant type chart. Also noted are the
some of the various ways to spell the CAIRNS name. I think the rule must
have been you can spell CAIRNS any way you want to, even with in the
same immediate family.
This report begins with Richard CAIRNS and his wife Sarah who came to
USA in 1864 and died in Sparta IL on Dec 3 1893 at the age of 87 yrs.
the report includes some of their 8 children.
James, John, Thomas and also list a quite comprehensive list of their
families.
My immediate line is:
Richard> John> Robert>Mary Ellen (Nellie) who was my grandmother.
Mary Ellen CAIRNES b. 2 Aug. 1890 in Nashville, Washington, IL d. 9 Aug
1980
If you have CAIRNES families in you line would be glad to check this
report for your names.
After today I will be out of town for a week, but if you send me your
information regarding who you are searching would be glad to check your
name on this report.

Terry,
The spelling of the Kern name has many variant spellings. In my family
is goes from Kern, Kerns, Karn, Karnes and Carnes. It just depended on how
the clerks heard and spelled the name as many could not read and write or
simply were not present at the time clerks wrote the information down for
recording in the Court journals.

While stumbling through the internet, I found a JOHN CARNES had written a
letter to John Adams 1735-1826. This is reportedly in papers of Benjamin
Goodhue1748-1814 New York Society Library, NY, NY control #NYHV8 6 A2213.
Got the website through Rootsweb newsletter, but didn't write it down--think
I bookmarked it.
Has anybody seen this letter and/or does anybody know how I could go
about getting a copy of it?
Goodhue was from Massachusetts and my CARNES are from Morris County, New
Jersey so maybe not my line anyway.
My line:
John CARNES b. 1735 d after 1801 (will written then) Mendham, New
Jersey m March 21, 1755(1) Penelope COLEMAN b probably Roxbury, Morris Col.,
NJ. d after 1773. (2) Martha
The COLEMAN and SWAZEY families came to Roxbury, New Jersey from
Southold, Long Island in 1735--all well documented in the two volume History
of the Jersey Settlers of Adams County, Mississippi--but there was no mention
of CARNES moving with them.
Have presumed CARNES is Scottish, but Germans had moved into that area
around 1707--Samuel KARNS in 1724, "he is the grandson of David KARN, born
in Morris County..descendant of Christopher KARN of German Valley. "[from pg
84 of A History of Morris County, New Jersey, Vol.II, New York & Chicago:
Lewis Publishing Co., 1914.]
Does anybody know:
1 Anything about this John Carnes?
2 How to get a copy of the letter, among the papers of Benjamin
Goodhue, written by that John Carnes?
3 Whether the Morris County, NJ CARNES maybe of German descendant
rather than Scottish descent.?

My maternal ggrandmother was Emma Carnes who married Joseph Kelly
Ballard (on Dec. 24, 1879, Bartow, GA I think). They had six sons:
Charles Henry b. Dec 22, 1880, Berry, Lucious, Claude, Thomas Kelly, and
Ralph. Lived in Greenwood Springs, Monroe County, Mississippi.
Unfortunately, I do not know the parents or siblings of Emma--or even
her full name.

My great-grandfather was George Washington (possibly Wellington) CARNES,
born in Philadelphia on October 17, 1889. He had two brothers...James
and Lester. His parents were John CARNES and Elizabeth
SUTHARD/SOUTHARD. At this point, I know nothing about them. Supposedly,
both John and Elizabeth died when the three boys were minors and they
were apparently shipped out to live with relatives. George and Lester
both eventually migrated to Chicago where they lived their adult lives.
The third brother, James, supposedly abandoned his wife and daughter and
was never heard from again. I have recently tried to acquire info
about a potential adoption circa 1905-ish in Philadelphia but was told
records were unavailable if I wasn't the one adopted. Anyone have any
clues? Thanks.

I think that the Kern families are related to Carnes famlies, right?
You mentioned Rowan County, NC. Is that where Judge Rowan lived who was
married to Rebecca Carnes from Pennsylvania? I have been wanting to find
out if I'm related to her. Does anyone have information about Rebecca
Carnes Rowan?

Ok Tom,
I will start the ball rolling. I descend from Leonard Kern, who I believe
was the Leonard Kern who arrived in Philadelphia on Oct 7, 1743 and married
Anna Margaretha Schmidt in Swatara Township, Lancaster Co. Pa. by Rev. John
Casper Stoever on 27 April 1746. He wrote his will in Rowan Co. NC in 1780
and it was probated in 1805. His wife preceded him in death and he left
the following children, Leonard, Jr. (my line) who married Ann Billings,
Peter, Philip, Mary who married a Lane; Margaret who married a Lovelace;
and Catherine who later married Henry Wyman.
My Leonard Kern m. 1) Mary Billings, dau of John/Juliana Billings of
Old Rowan Co. NC in what is now Davidson Co. NC. 2) Katherine (Caty)
Doerner.
Children were Margaret Kerns m. William Green
Mary Kerns m. Adam Strous
Polly Kerns m. David Hedrick
Leonard, 3rd. m. Mary (Polly) Plaiss?
Katherine Kerns m. Peter Summy
Susannah Kerns m. George Lukenbill (my line)
All married in NC.
Leonard Kern/ 2) Caty Doerner had the following children
George Kerns,
Solomon Kerns
William Kerns
Peter Kerns
Samuel Kerns
My line then goes to Joseph Lukenbill/Sarah Crim (married in Washington Co.
IN
David K. Lukenbill/ 3) Mary Bell Long in Louisville, KY
Minnie I. Lukenbill/Theodore Luckett in Louisville, KY in 1901
Embry Lee Luckett/Mary Reva Furnish in Denton Co. TX 1931
then little ole me - Betty Luckett Babitzke
Maybe this will ring someone's bell. I have quite a bit of information on
the Kern families.
Anyone awake?
Betty Babitzke
