Hi,
I am researching another James Carnegie born nearby in Newgrange estate, St.Vigeans in
1789 so am aware of your Carnegies.
Yesterday I was at Angus Archives at Restenneth Priory and came across a couple of items
relating to your guy.
In 'List of Persons from the Protocol Book of John Colville, Arbroath Burgh
Records' there is an entry that reads:-
'Carcary/"Carghrie", James, wright in Smiddycroft 1783'
He does not appear in the 'Arbroath Burgess Index 1789-1902'.
St.Vigeans Poor Assesments were taken to determine how much each person in the parish
should contribute to the parish poor. This information relating to your Carnegies
appears:-
'1813 Mr Colvills Feus of Smithycroft
Robert Carnegie(for G.Kydd) 21/2 pence'
[a few rows further down]
'Jane Carnegie 1 pence'
[a few rows further down]
'Robert Carnegie 41/2 pence'
same information is in the 1814 Poor Assessment too.
Jump to the 1829 Poor assessment and the entry reads:-
'Jane Carnegy perhaps James Carnegy 41/2 pence'
and in the 1832 Poor Assessment:-
'James or Jane Carnegy 71/2pence'
In 'Roll of the male heads of families being members...Inverbrothock Kirk 1835'
there is an entry;-
'James Carnegie, Smithycroft'
and another
'William Carnegie, Wardmillcroft'
The only other thing I came across which MAY relate to your researches is in the 1818
St.Vigeans Poor assessments which doesn't list the contributions but only those who
received poor relief. Under the heading 'Class III weekly pensioners able to gain part
of their livlihood' is listed a 'Widow Carnegie at Thomas ?Millars? Arbroath'
Don't know if that strikes a chord with you?
Hope this is useful in your researches.
Best wishes,
Robin
In the 1836 census 'Return of Population of Arbroath made in August 1836' P27. has
Smiddycroft with 'Carnegie 1(or possibly 6) males, 1 female, 7 children' listed.
That is all the info that census carried.
