Ruth, Phil, & Norman,
At the present, I am still working to verify all information. I will be
happy to share what I do have. I thought by putting it on the list that
maybe someone of you had been working on the same group, and would be able
to either prove or disprove what I have!
First of all, I have had information from Beverly Dickson Bean, whose
husband was the GG-Grandson of Alexander Carnahan. She has extensively
researched this family, and thus far has not been able to locate Alexander's
father's (William) parents. There are court records regarding the
settlement of William's estate. He died intestate. James and Ezekiel
fought over William's land. Before settlement was reached, Ezekiel had
cleared the timber away. Alexander wasn't mentioned in the suits and stayed
out of the quarrel. It has been told that there was so much dissension that
it tore the family apart. Alexander seemed to live apart from his brothers.
Rhea Co., TN Tax List for 1823, Capt. Lewis's Co.
Alexander H. Carnahan
Daniel Chumley
There were no other Carnahan or Chumley families found.
Rhea Co., TN Mnue Docket 1823-1829
Ordered: Wm. Ferguson overseer for road from Jacob Beck's to Walton's
Ferry.
Hands: Henry Beck, Thomas Gadbehere, James Carnahan, George Riggle,
Thomas Anderson and John Ferguson. 10 May 1822
Rhea Co., TN Marriages
Elizabeth Carnahan & Daniel Chumley on 26 Jan 1815
Elizabeth Chumley & Robert Goad by D. Walker, JP on 17 Jan 1826
Jane Carnahan & Frederick Thurman by Wm. Kennedy on 21 Oct 1824
James Carnahan & Prudence Smith by James A. Darwin, JP on 9 Aug 1828
Alexander Carnahan married Elizabeth Thurman but no record has been found.
Jane and James Carnahan were twins.
There has been some question as to the year that Elizabeth & Daniel
married.
A transcript says 1813, but the marriage bond clearly says 1815. The bond
was for Daniel CHUMNY (his mark) and William KERNAHAN (his mark).
William K. Chumley was born 1816.
The Carnahans & Thurmans went to Bledsoe Co. before going to Jackson Co.
The Bledsoe TN Execution Docket 1810-1824 shows Sept 1822, page 117, #225:
Richard Chumbley - judgement. (I'm trying to determine if there was any
relation to Daniel.)
1840 Jackson Co., TN census lists W. K. Chumney, wife, and child. Six
houses away lists William Carnahan with two males - 1 of age 30-40, 1 age
70-80, three females - 1 of age 5-10, 1 of age 15-20, and 1 of age 60-70.
William Carnahan has not been found on another census. I believe he died,
as well as his wife. William K. Chumley's family moved to Macon Co., TN
then on to Franklin Co., IL where they lived a good many years. William K.
and several children (his wife, Ruth Short) having died, moved to Texas.
William died 12 May 1886 in Alvord, Wise Co., TX.
William K. Chumley & wife, Ruth had the following children:
Elizabeth (I think named after his mother)
Amelia
William Jackson (perhaps named after his grandfather as well as himself)
Daniel Richard (I think named after his father and perhaps a brother or
uncle??)
Martha
Mary Henrietta
Joshua
James M. (maybe after Elizabeth's brother)
Lucy
Elisha
Again, this is my opinion, but I could never figure out what William's
middle initial of K stood for. But on the marriage bond of his parents,
William's name was spelled with a K for Kernahan! William Kernahan
Chumley??? Maybe, but of course, that's wishful thinking!! HA! I still
have a lot of searching to do, but will look forward to working with this
list.
Thanks,
Cynthia Chumley
