Nina - The early Pennsylvania Carnahans often used naming patterns like this to
name their children:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mcging/names.html
1st son was named after the father's father.
2nd son was named after the mother's father.
3rd son was named after the father.
4th son was named after the father's eldest brother.
1st daughter was named after the mother's mother.
2nd daughter was named after the father's mother.
3rd daughter was named after the mother.
4th daughter was named after the mother's eldest sister.
You can't always depend on these because of occasional problems that arise
with our knowledge (deaths of children etc.) but it explains why there were so
many James and Johns and other cousins lurking about ; )
Linda
James & John must be common names. There may be more than one in the
Revolutionary War.
I have one such Carnahan ancestor on the paternal side:
Capt. James Carnahan* , b. 1/13/1754 Cumberland, PA -- d. 5/31/1788
assisted in establishing Am. Independence, while acting, the greater part of the
time as a Lieutenant.
( PA Archives , Ser.5, v. ii & iii; v. xii p. 193, 254; Ser. 10, p. 405, 493,
649, 769)
m. 1773 to Hannah Mahon
Children:
+ John Carnahan ( 1779 -1822 PA) m. 1801 Elizabeth Elliott (1782-1863)
daughter: Hannah Carnahan (1815, Mt. Pleasant, PA -1865, PA)
+ Dr. James Carnahan (b. 11/15/1775) m. Mary Van Dyke --> pres. of Princeton U.
from 1831 - 1853.
