Seeking help to find info on Colonel Henry Smith (c1758-aft 1820) and wife Mary Irish (26
Jan 1771 Philadelphia, PA-8 Aug 1833) d/o Nathaniel Irish Jr. and Elizabeth Thomas. The
known Smith children are:
1. Harriet Smith (c1791 VA - ?) m. Ninian Beall, 21 Nov 1809, Wheeling, WVA; they had at
least one daughter, Louisa.
2. Nathaniel Wilson Smith (9 Dec 1797, Wheeling, WVA-20 Aug 1873 Decatur, Macon Co, IL) m1
Rebecca Culbertson, 21 Dec 1819, Franklin Co, OH; children: Mary Jane, Esther
"Hetty", Martha, Culbertson; m2 Jane E. __, m c1833; children: Lizzie, Charles
Lloyd, Marcus D, Anthony, Clara; Nathaniel was a jeweler in Pittsburgh, PA, Columbus,
Ohio, and Wheeling, WVA, before he and his family moved to Clinton, IL by 1854, and by
1860 to Matoon, Coles Co, IL.
3. Caroline Smith (15 Mar 1806 VA-21 May 1865) m James Carnahan, 21 Jan 1830, Wheeling,
WVA.; they had several children: Henry, Ann, Mary, Louisa, Elizabeth, John R, Wallace (a
minister), and Isabella. This Carnahan family moved by 1860 to Newport, Campbell Co, KY,
with Caroline as head of household; by 1870 many of the children were living together w/o
mother in Greenville, Washington Co, Mississippi.
Henry Smith was a Colonel in the Revolutionary War. He was on the 1790 federal census for
Pittsburgh, Allegheny Co, PA, living alone so it is presumed he married Mary Irish
sometime after the census; he and his wife were in Wheeling c1791 when daughter Harriet
was born; Henry is mentioned as one of the founders of Wheeling. It is also speculated
that his father may be James Smith, will probated in Ohio Co, WVA 15 Nov 1790.
I would appreciate any help with this family.
