Message Board Post:
I've been sent some wonderful photos and stores by Dawn Carnahan and
wanted to share them with all of you. I hope you get as much enjoyment out
of them as I do.
If you see anything that is of interest or brings back memories, please
post it to the board for all of us to enjoy.
If you have trouble posting, get back to me off the board and we'll see
what we can work out.
When I asked Dawn's permission to post her material she sent the following
response. I couldn't have put it in any better terms than she did.

Hi Phil
I think sharing, as we do for example in my writers' group, helps start
the creative energy flowing and encourages others to just do it, for the
fun and joy. You don't have to be great to have fun. I'd be glad to
share my efforts. I've had no artistic training, but was fortunate that
my parents fed me the little engine principle with my oatmeal. I think I
can, I think
I can, I think I can. I know I have no great talents, but that doesn't
even slow me down. I just give it a go, for the fun of doing it.
As to The Big Lonely, I'm sure others have heard family stories so often
they could write them down. We all have some, if only we find time to
record and preserve them. My only regret is I didn't begin sooner, for
I've forgotten many things and the wonderful storytellers of my parents'
generation are now gone. Perhaps sharing will encourage others to write
them down NOW.
You have my permission to publish the photos and the Big Lonely on the
board.
I don't know if you want to only use Fitz's Folly, or the others too.
A note on the mural, except for the details of houses, waterfalls, etc.,
which were painted with brushes, it was all done using small household
sponges from the grocery store. Dribbling a number of colors (acrilic, in
small bottles at any craft store) on a damp sponge together and give a bit
of a
squeeze to blend just a bit. The secret is have the lay of the land in
your mind and using a fair amount of pressure, move the sponge to shape
hills, lake, whatever, always starting in the far distance, then middle,
then front, etc. Little bits of sponge can be shaped like fir trees,
bushes, flowers and dabbed on, etc. It's only paint and can be changed, if
you
don't like the effect. Just decide on the season and choose appropriate
colors.
Murals are great fun to do and really easy with a sponge, if time
consuming. In the near distance I painted in all the houses I've ever
lived in--from the house where I was born to where I live now. If there's
interest or need I could photograph them too. You can only see one, a
white one near the
bottom in that photo. It was in a valley, not on a hill, and had a lovely
creek flowing by, so I added a bit of stone and a stream. The house in
The Hollow, where I lived from age 2 1/2 until age 8--my Eden.
If people are interested, I've also written a biographical work about my
memories of World War II and life at that time that I call "The Child
Who's Mother Was War." The last part is fantasy, but the rest is just how
it was. I've read it several times with good reactions. But the Big
Lonely will take some time, if you decide to use it. I can send the other
along for you to peruse later on, if there's an interest. But I'm sure
others in our family also have things they might share. It would be
lovely to know and enjoy what other's do.
