C. Benjamin 'Ben' Carnahan
Memorial services for C. Benjamin "Ben" Carnahan, 85, of Coquille,
will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 26, at the Coquille Christian
Community Church. The Rev. Dean Klarr will officiate.
He was born Oct. 8, 1916, in Myrtle Creek. He died on Jan. 20,
2002, in Coquille after a brief battle with leukemia.
After 30 years of federal service as a meteorologist, electronics
technician and electronics division supervisor, Ben retired from the
United States Weather Bureau while in Anchorage, Alaska, in
December 1971. Upon his retirement, the family moved to Coquille,
where he worked several jobs, including the state employment office
and at Pape Cat. He was an active Kiwanis member since 1951, serving
twice as the lieutenant governor, with 48 years of perfect attendance.
He served as president numerous times, as well as holding various other
offices, and he wrote the newsletter for many years. He was active on a
local level with the Miss America Scholarship Pageant for more than 30
years, serving on the board in both Alaska and Coos County. He was
an avid family historian and also served on the board of the Coos County
Historical Society. He was instrumental in forming the South Coast
Alaska Club. In the last two years, he served as the statewide vice
president and district representative for NARFE.
He is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, Michial T. Carnahan
and Sue of Forest Grove, Randall A. Carnahan and Lisa and Charles
R. Carnahan and Elena of Coquille; daughter, Melinda L. Jenkins of
Bremerton, Wash.; sister, Mary Weaver of Myrtle Creek; nine
grandsons; four granddaughters; six great-grandsons; three
great-granddaughters; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family suggests memorial contributions to the Miss Coos County
Scholarship Pageant, Ben and Milllie Carnahan Memorial Fund, c/o
Mary Lou Munyon, 1177 Salmon Ave., Coos Bay, Ore. 97420; or
the Coquille Kiwanis, Ben Carnahan Foundation, P.O. Box 182,
Coquille, Ore. 97423.
Arrangements are under the direction of Amling/Schroeder Funeral
Service, Coquille Chapel, 396-3846.
