Thanks so much, Emma. I was really thinking that it must be "widow" but
couldn't make a definite id. You're super, cousin!

Hi LuAna,
I finally got to check the census. I think the word is widow. It is a
strange "w" but I went a few pages forward and backword and that same word
is used
with lots of the entries for women. If you turn your head sideways
and
squint
just a bit...<g>. it looks like widow.
Take care - Emma

By the way, from a search I did I found in the 1790 census, Philadelphia,
Philadelphia Co, PA, a Martha McKinlay, widow, age 48 (born about 1742):
-0- in '16 & up males including head' column
2 in 'under 16 males' column
1 in 'females including head' column
5 in 'all other persons' column
-0- in 'slaves' column
It also happens to list occupations but I couldn't make out the occupation
of Martha McKinlay. Do you happen to have access to those census images?
