Hi All,
I received this from Dawn Colburn this evening. It lists a lot of books for Jefferson
county, PA. She asked that I pass
it along to you all. I'm posting it to the list also, so you'll get it twice.
Have a Happy Thanksgiving everyone.

Hi Phil
I'm still plugging away getting my info back into the computer and in doing so (for
Jefferson County PA) I have some
books I find invaluable. Since you are in contact with so many people I thought I would
pass the info on them along to
you, in case you find others doing research in Jefferson County.
The author/compiler is Patricia M Steele, 10 Cherry Street, Brookville, PA 15825
"Tombstone Hoppin'" vols 1 & 2
(She walked the cemeteries and compiled inscriptions, notices of unmarked graves ((not
individually but when there were
a lot)) and even noted, in one case a stone she found on the ground behind the caretakers
building). "Who, When and
Where" v. 1 Jefferson County PA, Death and Marriage Records 1852-1855, Death
records, 1893-1906 ; v. 2 Newspaper items
1834-1889 & 1854-1889 ; v. 3 Marriage licenses 1885-1890.
All books are indexed, but while Who, When and Where have first names listed as well,
Tombstone Hoppin' has last
names only and so is more time consuming, but well worth it. I do not know the
availability of the above, but she has
a new one out that covers newspaper articles in Jefferson and Clarion Counties, and I
believe wills and other things as
well, and is listed as a "Volume 1". Unfortunately--my office being what it is,
I cannot lay my hands on the info
regarding title etc. If you would like, I will do so as soon as I find the catalog.
I've ordered the book and am
waiting anxiously.
Question, if I may. Winter will be shutting me down and I have to drive 30 miles to a
library that has census
microfilm. I have a clunky little reader, but it works, if laboriously. In your
experience, are the census forms
available on computer disks easier to read (or) more difficult (or) about the same. I
want to purchase some census for
my two most used counties for each new bit of info sends me back to the census again.
Have you worked with the discs,
and is so how would you rate them? I'm trying to decide which to buy.
Your information on Robert Carnahan up in Crawford County will have to wait until spring,
I'm afraid, until I can get to
the library, then I'll have a go at finding him.
Hope you have a nice holiday.
