Since your William seems to have started in Ohio--I believe I would look at
the Penn. Carnahans particularly around Pittsburg. I would look at the
Blockhouse Carnahans. There was a William in that original bunch. They are
well researched and if you find your guy with them, you're really in luck.
There is a booklet called "Carnahan's of Westmoreland" if you can get that
