Broke His Back While Wrestling
Erie, Pa., Oct. 1 -- Alvin Carnahan of Westyville was brought from the Edinboro state
normal school to the Hamot hospital last night in a most pitiable condition. Carnahan and
Winslow Breedy, a fellow student, both athletes, engaged in catch-as-catch-can wrestling.
Carnahan broke his back trying to throw his adversary over his head. Technically it was a
fracture or displacement near the juncture of the cervical and dorsal vertebrae. Carnahan
fell to the ground paralyzed and without sensation from the breast bone down. The
hospital surgeons are considering trephining to remove the preassure to the spinal cord as
the only possible remedy.
Carnahan, though conscious, has no physical suffering.
