Hi Linda,
Sorry for the delay in responding.
But.... have been thinking about your problem in actually linking your Martha A. to
Benjamin Young Carnahan.
Circumstantially it sure looks good doesn't it. And... if squiggles in my spine are
any indication then that is a good sign too....<g>.
But.... a will for Benjamin Young Carnahan won't help much because he died before
1850.
We know that Martha is with her mother in Boone Co., Arkansas in 1870.
We know that your Martha shows up in 1876 in Johnson Co., Texas.
One thing that would be helpful is to find out where and when Hopestell died. Her will
and later estate records might be helpful in finding out about Martha.
The other thing is.... if your Martha is the daughter of Benjamin Young Carnahan then when
and why did she end up in Johnson Co., Texas?
Johnson Co., Texas is just south of Dallas Co. in central Texas.
The other children of Benjamin Young Carnahan are:
Samuel who ended up in Newton Co., Arkansas in 1880 census
Green S. who appears to have settled in Lamar Co., Texas - on the Oklahoma border not far
from Arkansas.
George William who ended up in Payne Co., Oklahoma - north central Oklahoma.
David who ended up in Cooke Co., Texas - on the Oklahoma border but further west than
Lamar Co.
The unknowns here are the daughters - Sarah J., Elizabeth, and Martha.
If the Martha in Johnson Co., Texas in 1876 is the daughter of Benjamin Young Carnahan
there has to be some reason for her to move after 1870 from Arkansas to Texas. One
possibility might be that one of her sisters - Sarah J. or Elizabeth is married and living
in Johnson Co. at the time.
Hopefully others might have some ideas too but I think I would try to find out about
Hopestell's death and the sisters' marriages as one of the first things to try.
Take care - Emma
