Carroll - The Smiths of Virginia is a good source in some ways - the problem was that she
got several Carnahan families mixed together.
As for Benjamin L. Carnahan - for those researching this line: I have been working with
researchers on this line for many years. There are a few clues to his ancestry. First of
all when he was born (1797) - there were not a whole lot of Carnahan families in Kentucky.
The Carnahan families I have found there were the children of Col. John Carnahan and his
wife Eleanor. Benjamin Lodge was married to Col. John's daughter Elizabeth Carnahan -
and it was thought that the "L" in Benjamin L. Carnahan's name may have been
for Lodge. To make a long story short - if you look at the male children of Col. John
Carnahan who could be the parents of Benjamin - the most likely suspect is Adam Carnahan
who was married to Mary Thompson and died in Chillicothe, Ohio in 1801. Mary probably
went back to her family in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania after Adam died and may have
remarried - and so you find Benjamin Carnahan there in the 1820 census - probably having
been raised there. Also!
of note is that one of Benjamin L Carnahan's sons had the middle name of Thompson.
Anyone who is researching this line and would like to share or compare information is

found on this line.
