Hi Everyone,
A couple of weeks ago I indicated that I was trying to tie down the children
of Andrew Carnahan and Elizabeth Billingsley and that I was trying to work on
his son John.
Here is sort of a capsule of what I have gather so far. Would love to here
your thoughts on this family. Would also love to have any information that
might bring this family into focus.
Take care - Emma
First of all, so far we have 4 children for Hugh Carnahan and Mary in
Guilford Co., NC
Andrew - b. 11 June 1762
Sarah - b. abt 1766 - md Thomas Blair
John - b. abt 1768 - md Janet Billingsley
Mary - b. May 1774 - md Adam Rainer/Raimer/Raymer
Court records substantiate these children but I wonder if there aren't
others.
Andrew and his family end up in Rutherford Co., Tennessee
Sarah and Thomas Blair end up in Arkansas with John and then Thomas ends up
in Missouri.
John apparently moved to Alabama for a short time period and then ends up in
Arkansas.
Mary and Adam have been a brick wall for me for a long time.
Next... based on what we have from Andrew's family bible he and Elizabeth
Billingsley had these children:
Hugh - 6 Apr 1784
James - 18 Dec 1786
John - 18 Mar 1788
Thomas - 18 Aug 1790
Ann - 3 Oct 1792
Mary - 3 Jan 1795
If you look at the names of these known children they followed the
traditional naming patterns.
1st son after father's father = Hugh
2nd son after mother's father = James
1st daughter after mother's mother = Ann
2nd daughter after father's mother = Mary
Of Andrew's children:
Hugh md Elizabeth Tennison and his descendants ended up in Missouri
James's family seemd to stay in Tennessee - I need to work on him
John's family - thought to have moved to Alabama and then ended up in
Indiana. In later census records his children indicate they were born in Alabama.
Thomas - possibly Alabama and then back to Tennessee
Ann - I have no record of her other than her b. date in the Bible
Mary - md William Hart Youree - they stayed in Rutherford Co., Tennessee. As
least some of their descendants ended up in Missouri
Now for Andrew Carnahan and Elizabeth Billingsley.
1783 - Jan. 9 - marriage date from bible
1784 - 1787 - He is in various court records in Guilford Co., NC
1787 - He appears on the first tax roll for Davidson Co., Tn
1788 - Serves on jury in Davidson Co., Tn
1789 - Purchases land in Davidson Co. Tn
1790, 1792, 1793, 1794 - Court records in Davidson Co., Tn
1794 - Moves to Logan Co., Ky - Listed as resident of Logan Co., Ky when he
sells land in Davidson Co., Tn
1795 - Tax roll - Logan Co., Ky - also receives land grant in Logan Co., Ky
and listed as resident of Logan in a land sale
1796 - purchases land in Sumner Co., Tn - but I don't think he ever lived
there - If this is the right Andrew???
1797, 1799, 1800, 1802, 1803, 1804 - Tax roll - Warren Co., Ky
1805 - Moves back to Rutherford Co., Tn where he stays until his death.
In the 1797 Warren Co., Ky Tax Roll the following are also listed along with
Andrew:
John Dickey
Abraham Raimer Jr.
Abraham Raimer
And then I found :
1820 Limestone Co., Ala - State Census
John Carnahan 1511
Ephraim Dickey 1212 9 slaves
Jonathan Blair 1316 1 person of color 23 slaves
Adam Ranier 1011
John Dickey 1111 2 slaves
Andrew Blair 171 1 slave
Thomas Carnahan 1312
So... possibility these are:
1. John Carnahan - possibly son of Andrew Carnahan & Elizabeth Billingsley.
Based on later census the ages of children would fit - 5 males under 21 =
James Porter (1810), William H. (1812), John (1816), Erwin (1818), and Shadlock
(1818); 1 female under 12 = Martha (1816). Later census records for his
children indicate that they were born in Alabama.
2. Thomas Carnahan - possibly son of Andrew Carnahan & Elizabeth Billingsley
3. Jonathan Blair and Andrew Blair - The information I have shows that
Thomas Blair and Sarah Carnahan had sons named Jonathan and Andrew.
4. Adam Ranier - Could this be Adam Ranier and Mary Carnahan (sister of
Andrew)????
5. Ephraim Dickey & John Dickey - The information I have indicates that
George Dickey and Mary Scott had sons by this name. George Dickey's parents are
said to be John Dickey and Martha McNeely
Am looking at the Dickey folks since the John Carnahan in Indiana is said to
have married a Sarah Dickey. According to Dickey searchers her parents were
George Dickey and Mary Scott who resided in Limestone and Marion Cos. of
Alabama. So the Ephraim Dickey and John Dickey listed above could be her brothers.
Actually, Dickey searchers indicate that they are.
If all of the above folks are lined up correctly then this puts 2 of Andrew
Carnahan's sons, 2 of Sarah Carnahan's sons, and Mary Carnahan Rainer all in
Limestone Co., Alabama together with the Dickey folks.
So far I can't find any links between Aaron Carnahan and Elvira Mitchell to
Andrew Carnahan and Elizabeth Billingsley. However, I am finding records of
James Carnahan and Robert Carnahan in Nicholas Co., Ky which seem to lead back
to the Pennsylvania Carnahan's.
Again, would appreciate any assistance.
