I,m interested in the Carnahans that were " keepers of the horses " these
are my Carnahans! The Captain James Carnahan that drowned was MISTAKENLY
put in my family tree-in the daughters of the American revolution history
books--this error I have been trying to resolve. My Carnahans took care of
horses for the military, also built fort carnahan, were in the path of the
marading indians, ect and John Carnahan was killed at the block house--I
beleave this to be Andrews father but have no proof as of yet. Bob Carnahan
( It has been very hot in Illinois, I trim shrubs in this weather and will
be glad when it leaves. )

Subject: [CARNAHAN-L] Rev. War Carnahans
I received a question about these Carnahans the other day and thought
I
would share my answer with the list. There are several biographies floating
around that get these men confused with each other. As far as I can
tell -here are the James and John Carnahans of the Rev. War who at least set
foot in Westmoreland Co., Pennsylvania. My files are not perfect - so
please let me know if your research differs from mine.
1. Col. John Carnahan - sheriff of Westmoreland Co. - (probably also a
vet of the
French and Indian War). This John was the brother of Elizabeth
Carnahan who married Clement Finley. Consistently called Col. John in later
Westmoreland deeds.
2. Lt. John Carnahan married Rebecca Caruthers - apparently lived
adjoining these
other two Johns in Huntingdon Twp. Brother of James
Carnahan who married Hannah Mahan. According to JVT journals tried to save
his brother from drowning in the Allegheny River.
3. Capt. John Carnahan, son of Col. John Carnahan - eventually ended up
in
Christian Co., Ky.
--------
1. Captain James Carnahan m. Catherine/Catsey Potter d/o Samuel Potter -
apparent
son of Col. John Carnahan - brother-in-law of Benjamin Lodge.
2. Major/Captain James Carnahan who married Hannah Mahan - son of James
Carnahan
of Cumberland Co., Pa. - moved to Westmoreland after the
Revolution - drowned in the Allegheny River. Brother of John m. Rebecca
Caruthers.
3. Captain James Carnahan - brother of John killed at the blockhouse -
"keeper of the horses" - lived in Armstrong Twp., Westmoreland. Likely
father of John b. 1765 of Deer, Allegheny Co. Pa.
4. Cora Lynn Davis also called William Carnahan's son James - Capt. James
Carnahan. This James went to Nicholas Co., Ky. Cora Lynn Davis was a good
researcher so I have not discounted this but I also have not found any
evidence to back it. There is evidence that James s/o William was in
Westmoreland for a while before he went to Ky.
Thanks - Linda
P.S. I hope you are keeping cool! It is certainly hot enough here - we
are going
for a record - most days over 100 in a row! :-)
