Well, my Dad, Sister, Brother-in-law and I met with the gentleman who controls the
cemetery records - and we went to the cemetery with him. He didn't recall, nor did he
have a record of Margaret being buried up there. Interestingly, however, it does turn out
that there are 4 major areas in the cemetery where Carnahans are buried, with one or two
exceptions. There's a largish area where Aunt Josie and her family is buried, the plot
where my great-grandparents, Grandparents, Uncle Virge, etc are buried, and there are 2
other major plots - one that lists the owner as Hugh Carnahan, and one that lists the
owner as Ben Carnahan. Thomas Carnahan and Mary Taylor Carnahan are buried not far from my
family's plot, and Mr. Harrigan and Mr. Maitland are buried not far from the plot Tom
indicated is the plot registered under Hugh. There is a stone marking Benjamin Garrison
Carnahan's grave, but no other markers within that plot - but Tom believes the plot is
full, though there is no r!
ecord as to who is buried in it. It's also interesting that BG Carnahan doesn't
have a civil war headstone like so many others from that time, though he was in the war
(but he does have a little flag - is that the American Legion that supplies those?)- he
has a relatively new stone (by new, I'd say within the last 50 years or so!) so I
don't know if that's what my Grandfather was referring to from years ago, that
they wanted to know where Ben and Jennie were buried since there were no markers. I
suppose someone from the family must have bought him a stone. Again, don't really know
if the current stone replaced one that wasn't legible or if that's the one my
Grandfather was referring to as being originally unmarked. Dawn, that may be another one
you can answer! Mary Taylor Carnahan's also looks much more new than the others from
her time period, but Thomas has the old military-style stone. There is no record of anyone
being buried in Hugh's plot either, though if you look at!
the ground it looks like there may be graves there (hopefully this do
esn't sound too morbid for anyone! Haha!) Even in my immediate family's plot,
there appears to be unmarked graves on the back side of the plot that there's no
record of, so this really did just create more questions! We don't have proof that
there is anyone buried there - it just appears that way, with the ground sinking every so
often in relatively symmetrical patterns. It did put my mind at ease, though, that my
memory served me better than I had thought it did - that in fact, there are several
unmarked Carnahan graves up there, and it doesn't seem that the cemetery records cover
everyone there. It almost seems like the records from that time list the owners of the
plots, but not the contents... Hmmm....may be one of those mysteries never to be
solved...
