Hi Kristin,
Thanks so much for the information and I am so glad you are enjoying the posts.
I get them from all sorts of places. I do subscribe to ancestry and godfrey and both of them have newspapers online. Then I will just do random google searches combining the surname with different terms and see what I get...<g>.
Thanks again - Emma
Ok Everyone,
Phil and I have had several messages and phone calls back and forth trying
to figure out these two William Carnahan folks. So far we haven't made
it...<g>.
So, I thought I would sort of collect what we know. Post it in case someone
has any information that might help.
These are both from the John Carnahan and Sarah Dickey family.
John and Sarah had a son
James Porter Carnahan (1810-1886) whose 1st wife was Martha Bell
and a son
Ewing Carnahan (1818-1869) who married Elizabeth E. Murphy.
Both men had sons named William Carnahan.
For the William from James Porter family census records are:
1850 - Gibson Co., Indiana where he is listed as age 7.
1860 - Gibson Co., Indiana where he is listed as age 17
For the William from Ewing family census records are:
1850 - Warrick Co., Indiana where he is listed as age 3
1860 - Warrick Co. Indiana where he is listed as age 11.
Now.. in 1870 Ewing Carnahan is deceased and his widow, Elizabeth is in the
1870 census with two of their daughters, Paulina and Matilda.
James Porter Carnahan and his family is in Gibson Co., Indiana.
The only William we can find in 1870 that seems to fit is a William
Carnahan, age 23 living with the Jackson Steele Carnahan family in Gibson Co.,
Indiana. Jackson Steele Carnahan is a brother to James Porter and Ewing. But...
because this is the same location as the James Porter Carnahan family (Gibson
Co.) I had matched this William up as the son of James Porter. However....
the age would more closely match the William from Ewing's family.
From various folks and databases and the Carnahan newsletter we find
everything from a single William married twice - Martha Jane Gourley and Serena Bass
to each of the William's married once - one to each of these two ladies.
However, this seem to be the most common line up:
William A. Carnahan - son of Ewing Carnahan married Serena Bass in 1877 and
had these children:
Ada A. - Jan 1878
Arminda - 7 May 1880
Lorinda B. - Dec 1882
Francis Jerome - 27 Dec 1886
Newit M. - 20 Mar 1892
all children born in Indiana
and
William Jasper Carnahan - son of James Porter Carnahan married Martha Jane
Gourley and had these children:
Jeanette - 27 Nov 1866-127 Nov 866
Luretta - 27 Nov 1866
Virginia Mary - 26 Apr 1869
John P. - 29 Aug 1870-3 Dec 1870
All children born in Atchison Co., Kansas.
This listing also shows William Jasper Carnahan as dying on 9 Feb 1870 in
Atchison Co., Kansas.
William A. Carnahan and Serena Bass can be found in the 1880 census of
Warrick Co., Indiana; 1900, 1910, and 1920 census of Gibson Co., Indiana.
However, we aren't finding the William Jasper Carnahan family anywhere in
census records. If William Jasper died in Feb. 1870 in Atchison Co., Kansas
and if son John P. Carnahan was born in Atchison Co., Kansas in Aug. 1870 it
would seem they would be in the 1870 census there. However, no luck. Nor have
we been successful in tracking William Jasper's family in later census
records.
The only Carnahan we can find in the Atchison Co., Kansas 1870 census is
this family:
1870 - June 10 - Atchison Ward 1, Atchison Co., Kansas - pg. 181A - 231/217:
Carnahan, J??? (female) - age 26 - keeping house - b. Indiana
Jane - 3 - Ks
Julia - 1 - Ks
Ancestry indexes her first name as Jaka while Heritage Quest indexes her
first name as Julia. The children's names don't match what has been shown for
William Jasper Carnahan and Martha Gourley. Would anyone know who these folks
are?
Now.. other bits and pieces....
Ancestry's Indiana Marriage Collection, 1800-1941 does show these marriages:
William J. Carnahan to Martha J. Gourley - 9 Feb 1866 - Gibson Co., Indiana.
Luretta Carnahan to John E. Wagner on 29 Jan 1886 - Gibson Co., Indiana
This marriage has been matched up to the daughter of William Jasper Carnahan
and Martha Jane Gourley.
Mary Carnahan to Milton Bryant - 25 Sept 1888 - Gibson Co., Indiana
This marriage has been matched up to Virginia Mary - daughter of William
Jasper Carnahan and Martha Jane Gourley
In a world connect database I found a listing for Virginia Mary Carnahan
that indicates she married twice - 1st to Amos Milton Bryant on 25 Sept 1888 and
then to Samuel Nicholas Grant in 1909/1910. This listing also indicates
that she had a son by Milton Bryant.
In the 1900 census in Vanderburgh Co., Indiana there is a Jennie Bryant - b.
1869 in Kansas listed as divorced and as a servant but no children are shown.
In the 1910 census of Vanderburgh Co., Indiana is this listing:
Aprl 15 - Evansville, Vanderburgh Co., Ind - ED 95 - pg. 1A - 12/12
Grant, Samuel N. - head - 48 - md2 - 1 year - Ind-Eng-Pa - plumber own shop
Virginia M. - wife - 41 - md3 - 1 yr - 1/1 - Ks-Ind-Ind
Bryant, Ernest G. - stepson - 20 - s - Ind-Ind-Ks
Grant, Mabel M. - daug - 18 - s - Ind-Ind-Ind
Edna G. - daug - 16 - s - Ind-Ind-Ind
Laura E. - daug - 11 - s - Ind-Ind-Ind
Samuel indicates he has been married twice while Virginia M. indicates she
has been married 3 times. Both indicate they married in the last year.
Then I found where Samuel N. Grant md Bertha Bidagner 1 May 1913 in
Vanderburg Co., Ind. Is this the same Samuel N. Grant? If so what happened because
other folks indicate Virginia Mary Carnahan didn't die until 15 Mar 1958.
And.. we have one more little addition:
In the 1870 census we found this listing:
1870 - July 25 - Des Moines, Polk Co., Iowa - pg. 176B - 272/276
Blair, Catharine - 42 - keeping house - Ohio
Carnahan, William - 28 - laborer - Ind
James G. - 27 - laborer - Ind
John M. - age 13 - Ind
Remember that Ewing Carnahan died in 1869. The 1870 census of Warrick Co.,
Indiana shows his widow with two of their daughters. But..... he and
Elizabeth had a son James b. 1844, a son William b. 1847, and a son John b. abt
1855.
Would anyone know who these folks in Iowa in 1870 might be?????
Ok.. that sort of summarizes what we have come up with the last couple of
days.
Phil - did I forget anything?????
Hopefully someone can add some more to it. If not we are going to put all
this info. in our notes for both William Carnahan(s) and cross our fingers
that someone will come up with something at a later date.
Thanks and have a great day - Emma
just discovered a great tool - google earth - I paid the $20 per year for
the better program - but there is a free program - have been zooming in on
cemeteries and
put a placmark on the section of the cemetery where family members are
buried - some have cemetery maps on the web and you can compare them with
the aerial shot to put the placemark
in and then save it to your genealogy files.

Well, I have some information that kind of matches up but I don't think they're the same. I have an Allen Wilson Carnahan, married to an Elizabeth Clark - however according to my info, both were born in PA and Elizabeth wasn't born until 1811.Both died in Lee County, Illinois - Allen in 1868 and Elizabeth in 1885. They had a number of children - one was a son named Wilson - unfortunately I don't have any information on this Wilson - just his brothers and sisters. There is another Wilson in our line - but his mother was a Margaret and he wasn't born until circa 1918 - and lived his whole life in PA. Ironically, his mother Margaret, though she was born in PA, died in Indianapolis in 1955. So many coincidences you'd think at least one would match up!

Wow - I just love these articles, even though they don't seem to be from my line. Where are you finding them?
Ok Everyone,
I have a question much like the one Phil asked the other day.
This is from the John Carnahan and Sarah Dickey line.
James Porter Carnahan was a son of John Carnahan and Sarah Dickey.
Ewing Carnahan was also a son of John Carnahan and Sarah Dickey.
Both men had sons named William and both of these Williams were born abt
1847.
Which of these two William Carnahan's is the one who married Martha Gourley
and then married Serena Bass?
Or.. did one marry on lady and the other, the other lady... whew....
Right now I have it lined up that William J. Carnahan, son of James Porter
Carnahan married these two ladies and have the following census records:
1850 - Gibson Co., Indiana
1860 - Gibson Co., Indiana
1870 - Gibson Co., Indiana
1880 - Warrick Co., Indiana
1900 - Gibson Co., Indiana
1910 - Gibson Co., Indiana
1920 - Gibson Co., Indiana
For the William J. Carnahan, son of Ewing Carnahan I only have him in the
1850 and 1860 census of Warrick Co., Indiana.
Could one of these William's have been in the Civil war and disappeared????
And then again... which William.
Help....<grin>.
Thanks - Emma

Obit - The Fort Wayne Journal Gazette - Fort Wayne, Allen Co., Indiana:
Carnahan
Wilson Carnahan, a well know farmer, died suddenly Tuesday morning, about 7:45 o'clock at the home of his son, William Carnahan, four miles southwest of Huntertown. On Monday he worked all day hoeing corn and doing chores and when he retired at night he felt as well as usual. About midnight however, he was siezed with pains in his chest, and he called to members of his family, who relieved his suffering to some extent by home remedies. Early Tuesday morning he became worse and his death occurred while he was alone in his room. Coroner J. E. Stults, who was called, found that the death was due to neuralgia of the heart.
Mr. Carnahan was seventy-three years of age and had been a resident of Allen county for many years. His wife died three years ago and since then he had made his home among his children. The later are Alvin Carnahan, Mrs. Elizabeth Schorpf, William D. Carnahan, Mrs. Margaret Depew, Mrs. Julia Edwards, and Mrs. Mima Larkins, all of Allen county, and Rachel and Gertrude, who live in Ohio

1956 - July 20 - News Article - Hammond Times - Hammond, Indiana:
5 Escape Car Trapped By Electric Wire
Chicago. (AP) -- Five men sweated through 15 minutes of terror late Thursday before deciding on a course of action that probably saved their lives.
A high tension wire snapped during a heavy thunderstorm, fell across their confertible in suburban Schiller Park, turning it into a potential electric chair.
The canvas top of the electrified vehicle caught fire, but William Carnahan, 25, of Wauconda, Ill., the driver, managed to press a button that caused it to roll down.
Then the tires started burning and the car paint started blistering as the men sat there.
Finally, they stood on the seats and hopped gingerly to the ground without touching the car's metal sides.
Other occupants were Don Carnahan, 24, the driver's brother; Nick Nemeth, 21, Fairview Heights; and James Gary, 21 and Bobby Schreiner, 23, both of Schiller Park.
Morning Phil and Everyone,
Have been trying to find an obit or something that would help on this family
and wouldn't you know it... no luck so far. But, from the messages it looks
as if you have pretty well decided that it is the son of Taylor who is
buried in Clarion Co., Pa.
Like you Phil, I can't find anything on Frank, son of Robert after the 1880
census.
And... just to back up a bit I have a question about Taylor Carnahan.
So far I found Taylor in these census records:
1850 - Madison, Clarion Co., Pa - child of 16
1870 - Madison, Clarion Co., Pa - married, age 37
1880 - Madison, Clarion Co., Pa - married, age 46
1900 - Madison, Clarion Co., Pa - married - age 66
1910 - Madison, Clarion Co., Pa - widow, age 76
Has anyone found him in 1860
Then, in doing a google search on "Taylor Carnahan" I hit this site.
Unfortunately I did the google search last. Wish I had found it sooner as it would
have helped with some of the census searches....<g>.
