Morning Everyone,
While rummaging around I found this tidbit.
Washington Post - 13 Dec 1887 - pg. 1
A Gang of Outlaws Raided
Chattanooga, Tenn., Dec. 12 - Three officers, Baker, Griffith, and Howell
made a raid this morning at Dayton, Tenn., on a gang of outlaws fortified in a
cabin a mile from town. The gang opened fire on the officers at they
approached. The desperadoes were armed with rifles and shotguns, but as soon as the
first round was fired the officers charged the cabin, knocked down the door and
captured three prisoners, shooting one of them, J. Carnahan, through the heart.
Anyone have an idea who this J. Carnahan might be?
Take care - Emma
Hi Everyone,
Have been fooling with the William H. Carnahan family and have some more bits
and pieces.
First of all... Mary Ann Carnahan - daughter of William H. Carnahan and
Clarissa Rice
b. abt 1834
md 1st Green W. Maxey on 23 June 1852
Green W. Maxey - b. 13 Oct 1830 Ind - d. 22 May 1862 Ind - buried Old
Friendship Cemetery in Warrick Co., Ind.
Children:
Melvina Maxey - b. 12 Aug 1852
William - b. 9 Mar 1855
Union N. - b. 2 Feb 1861
Sarah B. - b. 22 Feb 1863
Then... Mary Ann Carnahan md 2nd on 9 Aug 1866 in Warrick Co., Ind to George
Hall who was b. abt 1816 in Ky
Then.. Mary Ann Carnahan md 3rd on 11 July 1878 in Warrick Co., Ind to Peter
Irvin.
Census records for Mary Ann Carnahan go like this:
1840 Census - Hart, Warrick Co., Indiana - as a child with her parents
1850 Census - Owen, Warrick Co., Indiana - as a child with her father and
step-mother
1860 - Census - Owen, Warrick Co., Indiana
Green W. Maxey - 29 - farmer - Ind
Mary A. - 28 - Ind
Melvina - 7 - Ind
William - 5 - Ind
1870 - Census - Lane, Warrick Co., Indiana
Hall, George - 54 - farmer - Ky
Mary A. - 34 - keeping house - Ind
Nancy J. - 19 - s - house keeper - Ky
Maxey, Union - 9 - at home - Ind
Sarah B. - 7 - at home - Ind
The Nancy J. Hall here must be a daughter from another marriage for George.
Union and Sarah B. Maxey are Mary Ann's children with Green W. Maxey. Her son
William Maxey is living with other relatives - Jackson and Isabel Powers in
1870. I haven't found Melvina Maxey in 1870 yet.
1880 - Census - Lockhart, Pike Co., Indiana
Erwin, Peter - 58 - md - farmer - Ind-Ky-Va
Mary A. - 48 - wife - md - keeping house - Ind-Tn-Ind
Hall, Jane - ?? - stepdaughter - s - at home - Ky-Ky-Ky
Owen - 21 - son - s - farmer - Ind-Ind-Ind
Lane - 19 - son - s - farmer - Ind-Ind-Ind
Sarah - 15 - daughter - s - at home - Ind-Ind-Ind
Am guesing that the Jane Hall is the same person as the Nancy J. Hall in 1870
- daughter of George. Am not sure who Owen, Lane, and Sarah Hall are except
that the ages for Lane and Sarah would fit Union and Sarah B. Maxey from the
1870 census.
What do some of you think???????
1900 - Census - Patoka, Pike Co., Indiana
Maxey, Union - head - Feb 1861 - 39 - md 17 yrs - Ind-Ind-Ind - farming
Rachel J. - wife - Jan 1863 - 37 - md 17 yrs - 9/7 - Ind-Ind-Ind
Corda A. - daughter - Dec 1883 - 16 - s - Ind-Ind-Ind - at school
Sarah B. - daughter - Sept 1885 - 14 - s - Ind-Ind-Ind - at school
Clara E. - daughter - Oct 1888 - 11 - s - Ind-Ind-Ind - at school
Herman E. - son - Dec 1890 - s - Ind-Ind-Ind - at school
Mort C. - son - Jan 1893 - 7 - s - Ind-Ind-Ind
John W. - son - Mar 1895 - 5 - s - Ind-Ind-Ind
Union H. - son - Sept 1897 - 2 - s - Ind-Ind-Ind
Irwin, Mary A. - mother - Dec 1835 - 64 - wd - 4/4 - Ind-Ind-Ind
Mary Ann Carnahan Irvin isn't with her son Union in 1910 so I would guess
that she died sometime between 1900 and 1910 probably in Pike Co., Indiana.
Oh... about this Ervin/Erwin/Irvin/Irwin surname. It is spelled so many
different ways in different items. Anyone got a handle on what it really is??????
Ok.... comments/corrections/additions appreciated.
Take care - Emma

The description which came with the photo is as follows:
Group 5 - Obviously a broken off section of a much larger photo. Front row - Jennie (Cooley) Porter Carnahan, Benjamin Garrison Carnahan, the next I would guess to be a sister of Ben, from the features but don't know date of photo to check on who might be living then. Directly behind Ben is Wade Carnahan, others unknown.

Hi Sharon,
Just a real quick answer on one part and thanks so much for the info.
On the census images, it is spelled Cornelius in 1870 and Karnelus in 1880.
Those census takers did get creative with their spelling sometimes didn't they....<g>.
Thanks again for the information.

Thanks so much - Emma

Thank you!
I had only one unknown child for them - b. 2/8/1890.
While I'm thinking on it - records from a cousin's efforts several years ago indicated that William H. Carnahan, Ewing's brother, married twice. The last of his 17 children was b. 1864. According to her documents, he left his family in Indiana and removed to CA where he died in 1890.
Do you have any information that would confirm this?
Any clue what in CA was the attraction?
Thanks!

Hi, Emma. What a great find. Yes, that is my great grandfather and this
places him in Mansfield in 1890. I knew he worked in a laundry in
Mansfield,Ohio and in Iowa and owned and worked in several in Texas, but I didn't know he
owned one in Mansfield. That was his profession most of his life.
Mansfield is where he was born, raised and married. He was in Texas by 1899 and in
1910 working in a laundry in Waco, Texas. Thanks for sending it my way and
please keep your eye out for any others you might see in Mansfield.
Since you are searching the Mansfield News, the June 25, 1902 newspaper has
his father's J. C. Carnahan's death notice. The J. C. stands for James
Clark. It mentions his four sons (with some errors). Both daughters were dead by
then and not mentioned. If you run across it, you will know he belongs to
me.
Thanks again.

When Dick returned to San Antonio in 1945, he left the Army as Lieutenant Colonel and established his private practice of dentistry, always with the support of his beloved!
Adele. Soon their son Richard Jr., was joined by two sisters Susan and Peggy. Mom was ever an active and loving presence in their lives.
Continually a proponent of education, Adele became licensed in Texas as a Registered Nurse in 1958 and began over a thirty-year tenure with the San Antonio Independent School District which included duties as: school nurse, classroom teacher and junior high school counselor. During her teaching career, she received her Master of Psychology in 1968 from Trinity University and Master of Education from Our Lady of the Lake University in 1972. In 1984, she became a Licensed Professional Counselor. She was awarded the Outstanding Achievement Award as School Counselor from the SAISD.
The Carnahans were a founding family of St. Luke's Episcopal Church where Adele served with the Altar Guild, Stephen's Ministry and as a Lay Reader. She served as president of the San Antonio Dental Auxiliary of which she was a member for six decades. She enjoyed her association with the San Antonio Assistance League, her membership in a garden club that did not garden and a sewing club that had ceased to sew.
Adele is survived by her loving husband, Richard Carnahan, D.D.S.; children, Richard "Corky"” Carnahan, D.D.S., Susan Cherry Hawthorne of Dallas and Peggy Taylor of Little Rock; her grandchildren, Carey, Colleen and Richard Carnahan, III; Elizabeth and Megan Hawthorne; Gretchen Wietstruck and Maggie Hawthorne; her great grandchildren are twins Abigail and Madeline and their brother, Ian Wietstruck.
