Robert B. Carnahan
Robert B. Carnahan, for years one of the foremost attorneys at the Pittsburg bar, died in that city yesterday, aged sicty-four years. Mr. Carnahan was the attorney for Mrs. Mary Shenley, many times a millionaire, who recently presented the city with an extensive park. Mr. Carnahan had much to do with bringing about this public give, and it is a singular coincidence that he passed away upon the very day on which the park was formally opened. The deceased was a graduate of the Western University of Pennsylvania and studdied law with Walter Forward, Tyler's Secretary of the Treasury. Years ago he took front rank as a constitutional lawyer. He was for nine years United States Attorney for the Western District of Pennsylvania under Presidents Lincoln, Johnson, and Grant; had been County Solicitor twenty one years, a member of the Board of School Controllers, and latterly a city Councilman. During the preliminary campaigh last Spring, he was brought forward as an available R!
epublician candidate for Mayor, but did not enter the canvass.

A Lady And Driver Drowned
Minneapolis, Jan. 2 - A special to the Tribune from Pierre, S. D. says:
News reached here today from Fort Sully of the drowning of Mrs E. C. Carnahan, wife of Lieut. Carnahan, while crossing the Missouri River in a closed ambulance. The ice over the main channel broke and the entire conveyance was drawn under the ice. Lieut. Carnahan, who was riding ahead, seeing the catastrophe, went to the rescue and was barely saved from drowning by a detail of soldiers. The ambulance, containing Mrs. Carnahan, was found under the ide, but the driver's body has not been recovered. The lady was a daughter of Dr. Wooten, Superintendent of the Government Indian School at Cheyenne Agency and was highly connected with leading families in Kentucky. She was only recently married.

Hi Darrell,
I just checked the census notes for these folks.
Interesting enough, in 1870 she is listed as Martha J., age 12 but in 1880 she is listed as Jennie M., age 21.
So..... looks like Jennie M. is a good bet.
And I also show that this Martha Jane married a James Hill.
Take care - Emma

I have researched Carnahan very thoroughly and written a book on the history
of the clan. The early anglicized spelling of the name was Clann
Cearnacháin.
My research is all documented and goes back to Adam and Eve. I can say with
absolute certainty: There is no Carnahan Tartan. The reasons are explained
in the book. Also I can say with absolute certainty: There is no Carnahan
Family Crest or Blazon of Arms. Again the reasons are explained in the
book. The reasons and information to reach this state of certainty are long
and tedious and involved the Chief Herald of Ireland, etc. Much too long
for an email answer.
If you discover a Blazon of Arms, Family Crest or Tartan, you can be certain
that they are a modern invention and not authentic to the Clan.

spellings

That's the guy Phil,
Thanks so much.
I never ordered from their ads in Genealogical Helper so have no idea
concerning quality, etc.
Interesting that they have made the move from ads in magazines to ads on
e-bay.
Thanks again - Emma

Am going to take a guess here.....
Years and Years ago - back in those olden times - as in before computers -
and internet - and e-mail.......
There was a company who sold family group record sheets.
People could submit their information to this company. The company
packaged
them by surname and then sold the collection by that surname.
You just took a gamble on whether the sheets you received would apply to
your
line or not. You might bet a bunch of family group record sheets - each
sent
in by a different person. Or... you might get all the family group record
sheets for an entire line - or part of a line - or whatever. The package
for
that surname just included whatever anyone had send in.
That is what this looks like to me. The name for the seller on e-bay
appears
to be Yates. While my brain fails me right now that might have been the
name
from years ago as well but I just can't remember. But they would advertise
in genealogy magazines at the time.
Looking at the e-bay listing it appears to me that this is the same thing.
Take care - Emma
