Indiana Evening Gazette - Indiana, Pennsylvania - 28 Dec 1910
Mr. and Mrs. T. M. Carnahan of Shelocta, Observed Double Anniversary
Christmas always brings double joy to Mr. and Mrs. T. M. Carnahan, venerable residents of Shelocta, for it marks the anniversary of their marrige fifty-five years ago. In commemoration of the event this year, a family reunion was held at the home in Shelocta, where their six children and 15 grandchildren gathered. The day was thoroughly enjoyed by all.
Mr. Carnahan has been a merchant at Shelocta for 20 years and for 13 years has been the postmaster of the village.
He was born in Perrysville, Westmoreland County, August 2, 1836. He was raised on a farm, which work he followed until 2 years ago when he retired as a soil tiller to engage in the mercantile business in Shelocta. When a young man he moved to Salina and later to Indiana.
On Christmas Day, 1855, Mr. Carnahan was united in marriage to Mary Ellen Hamilton, known as one of the prettiest girls in White township, at that time. The ceremony was performed at Indiana by Rev. McElhaney. The young couple located on the Hamilton farm, one and one-half miles east of Indiana, where they remained for several years, during which time their family of eight children were born. They later bought the Patterson farm on the state road, two miles east of Parkwood, and resided there until they moved to Shelocta. Mr. and Mrs Carnahan are devoted members of the United Presbyterian Church of Shelocta, of which Mr. Carnahan has been a ruling elder for several years. The couple both enjoy good health and bid fair to observe many more marriage anniversaries. Mr. Carnahan takes an active part in business and the handling of the mails at Shelocta. The names of their children are: J. O. Carnahan of Indiana; Jennie M., married to James Hill of Indiana; D. E. Carnah!
an, of Laughlinstown, Westmoreland County; Ella M., married to J. S. Carnahan, who is engaged in the mercantile business with his father at Shelocta; and T. W. Carnahan, the postmaster and merchant at Parkwood. Two daughters, Mary Cynthetta and Winona Maude Carnahan died several years ago. Among those present were Israel Carnahan of Armstrong township; Mrs. Mary Agnes Herron, of Indiana; Squire and Mrs. S. M. Lowman of Shelocta; and Miss Emma Hill of Indiana. Israel Carnahan and Mrs. Herron are the only living brother and sister of Mr. T. M. Carnahan. Mrs. Herron was the only guest at the original wedding who attended the 55th anniversary on Saturday. Two handsome rockers and other gifts were presented to the parents by the children.
Emma's Note: Daughter Ella M. is married to John Smith Anderson, not J. S. Carnahan.

James Wilson Carnahan
Born in Knox County, Ky., 1870. Publisher. University of Kentucky, A.B., 1896. Died, August 25, 1958.
Following graduation from the University, he was an instructor at Berea College, Sue Bennett College, London, and taught at a number of other Kentucky schools.
He began work with the American Book Company and G & Company, educational publishers of Boston, Massachusetts, in 1900, doing editorial work and sales. In 1912, with J. A. Lyons, Carnahan organized the educational publishing house of Lyons and Carnahan in Chicago. Lyons died in 1920 and he became the sole owner of the firm. As President, he extended the business throughout the United States and the English-speaking world.
He made a substantial contribution for the renovation of the main residence at Coldstream Farm. Carnahan House, named in his honor, at one time was utilized as the alumni-faculty club of the University and later became the principal conference center for university conferences and institutes. He died in1958 only three months after Carnahan House was dedicated.
The University awarded him its Founders Day plaque, recognizing his contributions to education, in 1956. He helped write several textbooks. As an undergraduate at the University, he became an outstanding football left-tackle in the Southeastern Conference. He was President of the Kentucky Society of Chicago.
James Wilson Carnahan was named to the Hall of Distinguished Alumni in February, 1965.

Hi Folks,
There is another advertisement going around for an "Official" Carnahan book and CD. This ad came from a company in Denver, CO and is a hoax. It is along the same line as the books a company named Halbert's of Bath, OH used to put out. This company not only markets Carnahan books, but books on many other surnames as well.
If you receive an advertisement from Morphcorp, LLC throw it away.
Don't take my word for it, look at these web sites to gain more information about this hoax.

This photo was taken in 1906 in Oneida Kentucky, where Robert was an early benefactor of the Oneida Institute (for the education of poor coal mining children)
In the second photo he is addressing the Oneida Magistrate Court...holding session under a tree in 1913.
He started a lumber company and moved the family to Pine Bluff Arkansas where he drowned in 1928. (I believe in the Arkansas River)

I have attached a family portrait (probably 1925-27) And a corresponding photo of the (at the time) living brothers and sisters. The second was taken in the early 70's.
Also I have attached a photo of Ida Mae Holman Carnahan taken later in her life.
Also, Robert Carnahan, Jr (my Great-Grandfather) taken in 1906 in Oneida, Kentucky. He moved to Pine Bluff Arkansas where he drowned in 1928.
The portrait is Robert's brother James which hangs in Carnahan Hall at University of Kentucky. James founded Carnahan Publishing in Chicago and bought a large horse farm and house which he donated to the University. It hads been used as a faculty club and meeting center for years.
Couldn't resist adding the one of Clarence (my grandfather) from 1929 (with second wife, Loris)
