Hi JoAnn,
A year or so ago I fooled around with possibilities for Martha and I too like
Peter as a possiblity for her father. Dates and locations sure look
promising. So does the fact that James Carnahan and Martha named a son Peter...<g>.
The names for the children of James Carnahan and Martha are rather
interesting.
A son named John - could he have been named for James' brother?
A daughter Elizabeth - could she have been named for James' mother?
A son Peter - could he have been named for Martha's father?
A daughter Mary Jane - I wonder about this one. Elizabeth Tennison
Carnahan's mother was Jane Adams. Could the Mary come from Martha's side?
A bit of speculation but interesting none the less...<g>.
Take care - Emma

Hi JoAnn
Yep... have seen Elizabeth Billingsley Carnahan listed as Margaret Elizabeth
too. I question that as well. However, Elizabeth Billingsley Carnahan did
have a sister named Margaret who married Samuel Shannon.

Jo Ann
JoAnn,
I may have more questions for you than answers but here goes...<grin>.
If your mother is saying that Martha Woodward Carnahan was born in England
then that would not necessarily conflict with the information on the Elizabeth
Carnahan in the 1830 census of Rutherford Co., Tn.
What it might not jive with is that Martha Woodward Carnahan consistently
indicates in census records that she was born in Kentucky.
Also... I am calling her Martha Woodward Carnahan but so far I haven't found
any documents that list her maiden name. Have you found anything yet?
I haven't worked on Martha except as how she connects as wife of James
Carnahan.
And... now for the 1830 census. Yes, this would be Elizabeth Tennison
Carnahan, widow of Hugh Carnahan. Andrew Carnahan's will of 1835 mentions her as
Elizabeth Carnahan, widow of Hugh Carnahan decd. And... in 1821 Abraham
Tennison's will mentions a daughter as Hugh Carnahan's wife.
The 1830 census would show these folks.
Elizabeth Carnahan - 01110211001
1 male 5-10 = Hiram
1 male 10-15 = James
1 male 15-20 = John
2 females 5-10 = Jane & Elizabeth
1 female 10-15 = Nancy
1 female 15-20 = Mary
1 female 40-50 = Elizabeth Tennison Carnahan
Yes, the James King listed is the family of Nancy Adams Tennison and James
King. Nancy is also listed in Abraham Tennison's will as wife of James King.
One question though. All the information I have consistently lists Elizabeth
and just Elizabeth - Elizabeth Tennison Carnahan that is. Although I have
seen folks use the name Margaret Elizabeth for her I haven't been able to find
out where that double name came from. Have you? Would love to have that.
As for Martha Woodward and where she was born..... do you suppose that your
mother could be a generation off. Could Martha's mother have been the one who
was born in England?
Other than that... I don't know JoAnn. Am sort of out of ideas for you on
this one. It is rather difficult in that we don't really know for sure that
Martha's maiden name was Woodward. The trick would be to find a will or estate
papers where Martha is mentioned as a Carnahan.
Perhaps someone else will have some ideas.
Hope this helps a bit.
Take care - Emma

If you can get an aproximate date of departure, from England, you can find
the ship they sailed on, a death at sea would be recorded. Trying to help!

And... now I have a couple of questions about these...<g>.
Burton Lunsford Carnahan and Sarah N. Roberts had a son named James Calvin
Carnahan.
The information I have on James Calvin Carnahan is b. 8 Nov 1841 Tn - d. 20
Feb. 1925 Rutherford Co., Tn.
md Elizabeth McGill on 31 Aug 1865.
Elizabeth McGill died 8 Nov 1896.
Are the below J. C. and James Calvin the same person???
If so then did James Calvin Carnahan marry a 2nd time?
Thanks and take care - Emma

My only lead for a father for Francis is that a William Huey that also lived in Fayette there is a notation in a Wills and bond book from Fayette that has this William Huey left a letter granting Francis Huey a Bond. I do remember emailing with you, I had not been on the dig for this family for awhile as I have been on another line and just proved myself to the DAR so for now I'm done with that line and now want to get back to this Huey/Carnahan line and need to refresh my memory and see if anything new had been discovered. Hi Nancy - We've talked about the Huey/Carnahan family before. Did you ever find anything about the land that Francis Huey had in Venango County that he mentioned in his will?
John and Eleanor Carnahan's family did have land that was in southern Westmoreland/northern Fayette Co. but I don't see that she fits there.
The father James - sister Jane and brother James scenario would fit my ancestor James - the time period would too - but they were not in the Fayette County area as far as I know. Maybe she wasn't exactly in Fayette County but nearby?
I know you and I also talked about the possibility that she may be a daughter of John Carnahan and Rebecca Caruthers who were in southern Westmoreland and also in Venango County - but she was not mentioned in John's will dated 13 Feb 1824.
Another thing to think about - it looks like Francis and Mary Huey may have been using a naming pattern when naming their children. Francis Jr. is their 3rd son - that would leave Robert and William to be the parents of Mary Carnahan and Francis Huey. Do you know who Francis' father was?
Thanks - Linda

I'm trying to find parents for Mary Carnahan born 1777 in Fayette, PA (I believe) she married Francis Huey in 1792 and they then moved to Mercer, PA to start their family they both died there she on 2 Nov 1825. They married in 1792. Have you run across her in your research. I have family stories that her father was a James and she had a brother also named James and a sister Jane but no proof of any of the family stories.
Thanks, Rod, I already got this from Donna.
