Ok... have another family to work on.... Are all of you ready...<g>.
A long time ago I saw some articles about a Carnahan in the military involved in some problem with Mexico on the border between Arizona and Mexico. Now... I can't find those articles. But am betting this is the same person. Here is what I know so far. Still don't know what line he connects to.
Am hoping someone else can fill in the gaps.
Anyway.. here goes.
Take care - Emma
Earl Clarke Carnahan - b. Aug 1866 Miss. - d. 16 Jan 1925 Monrovia, California
The earliest I can find him is the 1880 census in Bowling Green, Warren Co., Ky - ED #226 - pg. 4 - 45/46
Carnahan, Mary - 37 - boarder - wd - dressmaker - Miss-Miss-NC
Earl - 15 - boarder - s - ???? in drug store - Miss-Miss-Miss
Walter - 11 - boarder - s - at school - Ky-Miss-Miss
Ruth - 9 - boarder - s - at school - Ky-Miss-Miss
They are living in a boarding house with lots and lots of people.
1900 - Census - Morro Castle, Cuba - Military & Naval Forces - ED #114 - pg. 6A
Carnahan, Earl C. - Capt. - U.S. Residence, ????, Ky - b. Aug 1866 - 33 - md 3 yrs - Vicksburg, Miss-Ireland-Miss
I haven't found him in 1910.
In the 1920 census there is this:
Nogales, Santa Cruz Co., Arizona - ED #126 - pg. 20A
Carnahan, Earl C. - head - 53 - md - Miss-Pa-Miss - officer U. S. Army
Minnie - wife - 42 - md - ??-Pa-Canada
Andrew A. - son - 5 - s - Ill-US-US
P. S. - Hang in there - Minnie is not Andrew's mother. More to come.
Now... in 1900 he says he is married. but this poor man apparently had a lot of challenges with being married.
1st. there is this article in the New York Times - 3 Jan 1891 - pg. 5
A Lady And Driver Drowned
Minneapolis, Jan. 2 - A special to the Tribune from Pierre, S.D., sayd: News reached here today from Fort Sully of the drowning of Mrs. E. C. Carnahan, wife of Lieut. Carnahan, while crossing the Missouri River in a closed ambulance. The ice over the main channel broke and the entire conveyance was drawn under the ice. Lieut. Carnahan, who was riding ahead, seeing the catastrophe, went to the rescue and was barely saved from drowning by a detail of soldiers. The ambulance, containing Mrs. Carnahan, was found under the ice, but the driver's body has not been recovered. The lady was a daughter of Dr. Wooten, Superintendent of the Government Indian School at Cheyenne Agency, and was highly connected with leading families in Kentucky. She was only recently married.
Then we have this one:
The Washington Post - 28 Dec 1914 - pg. 12
Funeral of Mrs. Carnahan Today
Funeral services for Mrs. Catherine Howard Carnahan, wife of Maj. Earl C. Carnahan, U.S.A., who died suddenly Wednesday, at Fort Sheridan, Ill., will be held this afternoon at 2: o'clock at the home of her mother, Mrs. George T. Howard, 1916 F. Street Northwest. The Rev. John M. Cooper, of St. Matthew's Catholic Church will officiate and burial will be private at Arlington Cemetery. Mrs. Carnahan is survived by her husband, a daughter Katherine, an infant son, her mother, Mrs. George T. Howard, two sisters, Mrs. John Ashburn, and Miss Frances Howard, and three brothers, Robert C. Howard, John C. Howard, and George T. Howard.
The child Andrew mentioned in the 1920 census as age 5 is that infant son.
Haven't found what happened to Katherine yet.
And then this article - The Washington Post - 3 Aug 1916
Mr. and Mrs. Edward V. Murphy announce the marriage of their daughter, Mrs. Minnie C. M. Fealy, to Lieut. Col. Earl C. Carnahan, U.S.A. The ceremony was performed on Tuesday at the home of the birde's parents, in the presence of only the immediate relatives of the bride and bridegroom. The Rev. Father Froelich officiated.
Next article - The Washington Post - 26 Jan 1925 - pg. 3
Died - On Sunday, January 18, 1925 at Monrovia, Calif, Col Earl C. Carnahan - U.S.A. (retired) - beloved husband of Minnie C. Carnahan - Funeral at Arlington.
And the final obit - The Washington Post - 14 July 1958 - pg. B2
Ex-Resident Dies At 82 in California
Minnie C. Carnahan, 82, former resident of Washington and sister of James W. Murphy, Official Reporter of the Senate, died Friday in Monrovia, Calif., after a long illness. She was the widow of Col. Earl C. Carnahan, U.S.A. (ret). Born in Washington, Mrs. Carnahan was educated here, graduating from the Visitation Convent School which was located on Connecticut Ave., on the site of the present Mayflower Hotel. Her father, Edward V. Murphy, was for many years Official Reporter of the Senate.
Mrs. Carnahan had been living in Monrovia since shortly after World War I. Survivors in this area include a sister, Josephine G. Murphy, and the brother, James, both of Chevy Chase.
The funeral service will be held today in Monrovia with burial in Arlington Cemetery on a later date.
Am afraid to make this any longer so see next message.
I have to jump in here on this one. Emma is correct
about the types of death certificates, but I'm not
sure that Hansel died in California. While his last
residence on the SSDI is Los Angeles County, he does
not show up on the California Death Index. At least I
haven't been able to find him yet.

Hi Lori,
California provides 2 types of death certificates.
The first one - a certified copy is restricted. You have to be a child, grandparent, grandchild, brother, sister, spouse, or domestic partner.
However, they will also send what they call a certified informational copy. It is the same as the certified copy except that it has a statement across it that says for information only not for identity purposes. You can get the information copy without having to provide a sworn statement concerning relationship.
Hope this helps a bit.

Hi Tim,
Thanks again for the information.
Have been playing around with this family and have a couple of questions and perhaps some additional information.
On John Carnahan and Mary Funk:
So far I have found them in the 1850, 1860, and 1870 census and then John is in the 1880 census - all in Armstrong Co. But the census would indicate a b. date of around 1810. From census records, I have 11 children for them and perhaps one more. So far I have:
Susannah - abt 1838
William H. - 1839
James S. - agt 1842
Nanch J. - abt 1844
Sarah M. - abt 1846
Hannah - abt 1848
Mary - abt 1849
John - abt 1851
Joseph B. - abt 1855
Elizabeth - abt 1857
male infant - abt 1860
The transcription for the Dunkard Cemetery also includes a Lillie - d. 1858 and I am wondering if she is their daughter also.
Of their children, Nancy J. died 29 Oct 1862, Joseph B. died 1 Oct 1865, and Elizabeth died 29 Dec 1874. All are buried in the Dunkard Cemetery with John and Mary.
On John Worth so far have found him in the 1870, 1880, 1910, 1920, and 1930 census. So far have not been able to find him in 1900....<sigh>.
The census sure messes up his children doesn't it...<g>.
In 1910 he is shown with
William B. - son - 14
Mayda - daughter - 10
Mabel W. - daughter 9
Blanchard, Julia N. - mother-in-law
In 1920 he is shown with
Worth - son - 23
Mayna - son - 20
May Worth - daughter - 14
Audra Bell - daughter - 8
So I guess the William B. in 1910 and the Worth in 1920 are the same.
It would seem that the female Mayda in 1910 and the male Mayna are also the same. Based on some newspaper articles I think this is a daughter named Mayda.
And... would you match up the Mabel W. from 1910 with the May Worth in 1920????
Oh... J. Worth is also in the California Death Index.
Again - thanks for the information.
Take care - Emma

Just happened to see your message and checked quickly.
The SSDI shows
Hansel R. Carnahan - ss# 353-10-7294 who died in California in Dec. 1989 - b. 1 July 1914
His last residence was Lancaster, Los Angeles Co., Ca.
A California death certificate might give you more information. So you might try writing for that.
You can also write the social security office and ask for a copy of his application. That might help as well.
Hope this helps a bit.

We have a John Worth Carnahan who fits the time frame, the geographic location and a brother named Charles Carnahan.
Here are the details followed by those of his brother Charles (and other siblings) and of his father (William H. Carnahan) and a bit on his Grandfather and G Grandfather:
John Worth CARNAHAN (11/12/1865 - 07/16/1946) married Mable N. ---------- (abt. 1873 or 1874 - ?). John was born in PA and died in Los Angeles, CA. Mable was born in Illinois. In 1880 John was living in Burrel Twp., Armstrong Co., PA. In 1913 he was living in Washington, DC., and in 1920 both he and Mable were living in Washington, DC. In 1934 he was living in Chicago, Cook Co., Illiinois. Together, John and Mable had four children: 1) Worth CARNAHAN (01/31/1896 - 06/__/1973) born in Illinois and died (probably) in Davidson Co., TN. In 1920 he was living in Washington, DC. 2) Mayna(rd?) CARNAHAN (abt. 1899 - 1900, died - ?) Mayna(rd?) was born in Illinois. 3) May Worth CARNAHAN (abt. 1905 -1906, died -?) was born in Washington, DC, and was living there in 1920. 4) Audra Bell CARNAHAN (abt. 1911 -1912, died - ?) was living in Washington DC in 1920.
John Worth Carnahan had a brother named Charles Carnahan who fits the description of the brother named in the Washington Post articles:
Charles CARNAHAN (abt. 1867 - 1868 - died - ?) was born in PA. In 1880 he was living in Burrell Twp, Armstrong Co., PA and in 1913 he was living in Chicago, Cook Co., Illinois.
John Worth and Charles were the 2nd and 3rd of a total of 12 children in the family. The others were:
1) Hallie Carnahan; 4) Clara May Carnahan; 5) Cora D. Carnahan; 6) Harry H. Carnahan 7) Homer I. Carnahan; 8) Flora J. Carnahan; 9) Myrtle Carnahan; 10) Grover C. Carnahan; 11) Wells Vernon Carnahan; and 12) Ralph Norman Carnahan.
John Worth's father was William H. Carnahan: (09/30/1839 - 07/04/1914) married Maria Louisa McKee (10/10/1844 - 12/10/1934) William was born in Allegheny Co., PA and died in Apollo, Armstrong Co, PA. Maria was born in Pennsylvania and died in Chicago, Cook Co., Illinois. In 1880 they lived in Burrell Twp, Armstrong Co., PA. In 1900 and in 1910 they lived in Apollo, Armstrong Co, PA. In 1920, Maria lived in East Conemaugh, Cambria Co., PA. Both William and Maria are buried at the Apollo/Riverview Cemetary, Armstrong Co., PA. Together they had 12 Children.
Continuing back in their lineage - William H Carnahan's father was John CARNAHAN (Abt 1795 - 09/23/1883) who married Mary Funk (03/01/1810 - 08/12/1876). John was born in Allegheny Co., PA and died in Apollo, Armstrong Co., PA. He was buried at the Dunkard Church Cem., Burrell Twp, Armstrong Co., PA. In 1860 he and Mary were living in Kittanning, Armstrong Co., PA and in 1870 they were living in Cochran Mills, Burrell Twp., Armstrong Co., PA. Together John and Mary had 8 children although an infant son was never named.
This John Carnahan's father was William Carnahan (born ? - died before 12/26/1815) who married Nancy (maiden name either Dawson or Henrie). Both William and Nancy were born in Ireland. William died in Pittsburgh, Allegheny Co, PA. Of their five children, two were over fourteen when William died. At the time of the settlement of William's estate (12/26/1815 - Allegheny County, PA Court Records), the youngest three children, (Henry, James and Jane Carnahan, who were all under the age of 14), were put under the guardianship of Ralph Dawson. At the time of the settlement, Nancy Carnahan had re-married to a James Anderson (or Andersen). Interestingly, a few years later it is noted in the Westmoreland County, PA probate records that a John Frederick of Washington Township, Westmoreland Co. PA was appointed guardian of the same three children in 1818. (Probate Ref: 1OC173N1818 Page 282, Volume 1, "Estate of William Carnahan administered by James Andersen and Nancy Carnahan A!
ndersen - 12/26/1818"). Nancy later married for a third time to a Mr. Proudlock
It all looks like a fit to me.
Tim

Thanks so much for the information on this one and the other one as well.
I did some searching and this is really interesting.
Her father was Ward Hill Lamon. The article said he was formerly Marshal of the District (D of C) during Lincoln's Administration and one of his biographers.
Boy... is that ever an understatement......
Ward Hill Lamon was Lincoln's law partner and then was his body guard in Washington. He is that famous missing body guard who was gone when Lincoln was killed. There are lots of hits for him on google.
After Ward Hill Lamon died his daughter - Dorothy Lamon Teillard collected his information and published a 'biography" of Lincoln.
I wonder of Dorothy is Dollie????
Thanks again.

Washington Post - 14 June 1901 - pg. 2
Carnahan Committed To Jail
Alleged Conspirator Held in $3,000 Bonds For The Federal Court.
Columbus, Ohio, June 13 --- J. Wentworth Carnahan, president of the Army and Navy Historical Publishing Company, of Washington, D. C., was arraigned here this afternoon in the United States Circuit Court for the Eastern Division of the Southern District of Ohio on the charge of conspiring to defraud veterans of the civil war. He was brought to the city by Deputy United States Marshal Edgar L. Turner, of the District of Columbia.
Carnahan entered a plea of not guilty and was committed to the Franklin County Jail under a bond of $3,000. Carnahan said that had his bond been fixed before the close of banking hours he could easily have obtained it, and that he will have no difficulty in procuring the requisite surety for his appearance this morning. In the event he is released, he will return immediately to Washington.
Carnahan is charged in the indictment with havng entered into a conspiracy with a party of five men to obtain money from ex-soldiers upon the false representation that they were special examiners for the Pension Department. The men with whom Carnahan is said to have associated called upon veterans, and upon the pretense of being government officials induced them to subscribe for a book published by Carnahan's company. An advance payment usually of $1 was demanded, but only in occasional instances were the books delivered. Two of these solicitors were tried before the United States Court in this city last week and sentenced to long terms in the Ohio penitentiary. The others are also serving penitentiary sentences.
Carnahan was represented as the arraignment by Messiah Slesser, who is associated with his brother, Charles C. Carnahan in the legal business in Chicago. Charles C. Carnahan is one of the most eminent atorneys of Chicago and was the Republican candidate for Congress in the Fifth district of Illinois last fall.
Carnahan says that he was advised to stand trial by Gen. Israel W. Stone, commander of the Grand Army of the District of Columbia, and the case will be bitterly contested. The case will be tried at the fall term of the court, which opens on September 24.

I believe this is James Thomas Carnahan, born abt 1851 in LA, husband of Corrine Gibson. they had the following six children:
Annie, b. 1875
Mary F, b. 1878
Thomas M, b. 1880
