Hello again. This is pretty much right Darrell, however, I have not placed my James Carnahan in the family of James C. Carnahan and Catherine Potter until I have at least some evidence beyond his birth date, although it seems highly likely that he is their child. Wouldn't that be nice to tie another link together. I would like to send you the information I have on this line, sources and all so that you will have it down to a T. I have the information in MS WORD format or in Family TreeMaker. Let me know if you want me to send it to you.

Hi, Darrell and thanks for your response. I do not think this is my family although I have looked at this David Carnahan as a possible child of my James Carnahan because of his birth date. I have a copy of a deed that Bob Carnahan sent me that has James Carnahan and wife Elizabeth (Clark) in it so I believe this Elizabeth Clark who married Allen Carnahan is a different person. I got David S. Carnahan's birth date from the 1900 census for Burbank, Los Angeles, CA. which is Jan. 1837. A lot of coincidences huh. But I believe they are all a different group.
Thanks Phil - This family is not familiar to me at all. Linda

Darrell - Mind if I break in for a minute : )
I think you may have a typo on James C. Carnahan's (m. Catherine Potter) death date - he died in 1800. Also I show an estimated date of birth of 1765 for him but it is only an estimate. . .we know Catherine Potter was born 29 Jan 1768 (family bible records of her second husband Matthew McClanahan.)

Alice - Here is some help I think. My dear friend Stella Mace is a wonderful researcher who has researched the Carnahans for years. This is a note to me about Eleanor Carnahan's estate papers (this is Eleanor mother of James C. Carnahan who married Catherine Potter). This note was not attached to the estate papers I have - but some things in the Westmoreland Co. Clerk's Office have been lost or stolen.
"Amongst Elinor's estate papers (1805) was this entry - "Westmorealnd Co. 4-7-1847 - John Carnahan of Hamilton Co., Ohio and Samuel and Ellenor Carnahan Hill of Westmoreland Co., PA sell to Catherine Wagel or Nagel widow of John Wagel or Nagel of A??? Co. 125 acres being part of a patent to James Lodge for use of James Carnahan dated 3-21-1799 next lands of James Van Horn, John Wilson, William Palmer, William Eckard, William Lyles, JAMES CLARK, which contained 396 acres."
So it certainly looks like James Clark was in the neighborhood - though I don't know why the other children didn't sign on this unless they divided it up earlier and the other children kept their portions?

I am posting this message now because I believe, although not proven that my James Carnahan born 1799 may be the son of James C. Carnahan and Catherine Potter. I’m hoping that since there has been such discussion of this line it might bring something to light.
I have finally found my James Carnahan. Hallelujah!
Family bible records of my 2nd great grandfather, James Clark Carnahan, have been a blessing in the research of my Carnahan ancestors. Even with this help, I had never found his father, James Carnahan who is mentioned in the bible with the notation, “James Carnahan my father died Dec 5th 1870 age 71.” Well, he has been found and I now know where he was born and where he died. He and his wife Elizabeth Clark had the following known children: James Clark Carnahan 1823, David S. Carnahan 1837, Melissa Carnahan 1840 and Elizabeth Jane Carnahan 1844. I am sure that there were others between 1823 and 1837 that are not documented in our family records. Oral and written history of my grandmother says that there was an Adam Carnahan born in this family in the mid 1820s, but I have been unable to make that connection. I am hoping that someone in this Carnahan group may see a connection to this family. Something that just pops out, rings a bell, etc., so that I!
can tie this James Carnahan to a family. Here are some important dates for James Carnahan.
1. From James Carnahan’s death date in Carnahan bible records, I have calculated his birth as 1799.
2. On the Pike, Knox County, OH 1960 census he is shown to be born in PENNSYLVANIA. He is listed as James Cornahan along with his wife Elizabeth and two daughters, Matisa (should be Malisa/Melissa) and Elizabeth I (should be Elizabeth J.). All these names are in the Carnahan bible.
3. I found James Carnahan’s son, James Clark Carnahan on the 1850 Pike, Knox County, OH census with his wife Mary Glasgow and their first child Eliza (should be Elza).
4. I found James Carnahan, age 70 on the 1870 Brown, Knox County, OH census living with Sarah Armstrong, age 72 and her daughter Lucinda, age 30? He is living next door to his daughter and son-in-law, Melissa and Frederick Coleman. James Carnahan died six months after this census was taken. His wife Elizabeth had died in 1861 and his daughter Elizabeth Jane in 1870 (all recorded in the James Clark Carnahan family bible.)
Other dates that place him in locations are:
1823 James Carnahan was in Pennsylvania for the birth of his first child James Clark Carnahan. The date and place are recorded in the family bible and in James Clark Carnahan’s obituary.
1829 James Carnahan was in Washington County, Pennsylvania when he and his wife Elizabeth Clark and her other Clark siblings made deed to James Clark (another brother) for land in Richland County, Ohio. Land their father James Clark left in his will. Two of the Clark brothers lived in Harrison County, OH. As an added note, James Clark Carnahan, the son, lived most of his adult life in Richland County, Ohio. He is on the 1880 census for Mansfield, Richland Co. Ohio.
1837 James Carnahan was in Ohio for the birth of his son David S. Carnahan. I do not know where but probably close to in-laws in Harrison or Richland County.
In 1840 and 1844 he was in Pennsylvania for the birth of his daughter Melissa and Elizabeth Jane (There is a James Carnahan in the 1840 Pittsburg, East Ward Pennsylvania census that could possibly be my James Carnahan.) Can anyone claim this James Carnahan or know who he belongs to?
1851 James Carnahan was in Pittsburg, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania according to a note from the office of the preacher requesting subscription due the church from his son James Clark Carnahan. This note was in the James Clark Carnahan bible with the family pages.
1860 and 1870 he was living in Knox County, Ohio close to his children, where he died.
I know where his daughters were during this time but I have been unable to find his sons James Clark Carnahan and David S. Carnahan in the 1860 census. Oral and written family history and death certificates of his children indicate James Clark Carnahan lived in Mansfield, OH. James Clark Carnahan shows up on the 1880 Mansfield, Richland County, OH census and David S. Carnahan begins showing up in Angelina Co., TX in the mid 1860’s as a Postmaster and in Shelby Co., TX on the 1870 and 1880 census as a lawyer and county judge. Both counties are in the NE corner of Texas. He was the first Carnahan of my line to come to TX. All of his nephews, sons of James Clark Carnahan, followed him to Texas. Was he someway related to the Carnahan families in Arkansas or Louisiana? Did he have a grandfather, nephew, or cousin from this area? Why did he come to TX so far away from his immediate family?
I will be most grateful for any help in finding James Carnahan’s parents/siblings or any connection, suggestions, just anything. As always, I will be happy to share what I have on this family.

Cora Lynn Davis did a lot of work on these lines in the late 1800's. This James Aikman Carnahan line was her direct line.

I don't have much information on the children of James Carnahan and Catherine Potter. Here is what I have - all of these children were born in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania:
James b. 1793 m. Sarah DeVore (the one you had)
Samuel Potter Carnahan b. 1795 d. before 1847
Eleanor Carnahan b. 1797 m. Samuel Hill
James Carnahan b. 1799
