Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
Emma - It has been speculated that she was their sister. There is a timing
problem. In the 1734 church court for John Carnahan it is mentioned that
they have seen his certificate from Ireland. It sounds as if he had not
been in Pennsylvania very long. James and John were first found in the tax
records in 1732, Jane was married in Philadelphia in 1719. If they were
siblings - did they come over together? That is quite a gap. Linda

Hi Virginia - Not only do I do not have proof that he descends from any of
these brothers but I am 90 percent sure that he doesn't. I believe that he
descends from the Blockhouse Carnahans. While there is a lot of
circumstantial evidence that the Blockhouse Carnahans descend from a 5th
brother to these 4 - I don't think there is conclusive evidence yet.
I define the Blockhouse Carnahans (Westmoreland Co., PA) as these siblings:
1. John who was killed at the Blockshouse - 1777 -married Sara Allen ?
2. Capt. James, John's brother who married Mary (probably Love) and was
stationed at Fort Pitt (became Deer, Allegheny, Pa.)
3. David who was fleet of foot : ) and who married 1) Elizabeth Kerr 2)
Jane Hutchinson
4. Adam presumed brother of David b. 1743/1744 buried Poke Run Cemetery m.
Sarah (Kennedy?)
5. William Carnahan who warranted land in Indiana County, Pennsylvania in
1784
Also probably these two:
6. Joseph b. abt 1750 - member of Capt. James Carnahan's Rev. War
regiment - went ? - or was possibly killed during the war
7. Margaret b.ca 1742 who married Mathew Miller - living next to Adam and
near David in the 1790 census.
I have quite a bit of circumstantial evidence that John belongs to Capt.
James Carnahan and his wife Mary - but not absolute proof yet : ) Great to
hear from you! Have you done any more research on John?

I thought I would share a brief summary of what I know about my Pennsylvania Carnahans. These are brothers - John, William, James and Joseph. I would love to see some discussion on the list about these families : )
1) John. John was a justice in the Octararo area of Chester County Pennsylvania in the 1730's. His disagreements with some of the town citizens were discussed in a church court in 1734. It was mentioned that he was from Ireland. When John died in 1738/1739 - his wife Jane was named administrator. John's brother James Carnahan was named John's administrator when Jane died in Jan 1742/1743. James shortly thereafter went to Cumberland County Pennsylvania near William (below). Three orphan children are mentioned in John's estate records: Jane, John and Mary (These children likely were raised by James Carnahan in the Cumberland Valley.)
2) William. William is found with a Blunston License in Cumberland County in 1736. William was involved in a neighborhood skirmish in 1744 involving several men - which plays out in the Big and Middle Springs Church Records. These records show Joseph as William's brother. William is shown on the 1789 (app.) Presbyterian church canvas (age 77) with wife Martha and children Joseph and Robert. Other children can be found in searching land and tax records. Martha evidently was his second wife and not the mother of his children (with the possible exception of Robert.) I show the following children for William: John, James, Elizabeth, William, Joseph, Adam, Robert and probably Margaret.
3) James. James is probably the most well-known of the Carnahan brothers - and many children have been attributed to him that probably belong to the other brothers. His wife has been reported as Margaret Janny or Hannah Powers. No document that I have found mentions his wife's name. The mention of Hannah in Cumberland County documents refers to Hannah Mahan - wife of James' son Capt. James. The elderJames served in the French and Indian War in 1747/48 as a Captain. James died after 1782 when he deeded his property to his son Adam. His wife had died previously. Children for James - Elizabeth, John, Adam, Sarah and James.
4). Joseph. Joseph came to his brother William's aid in the 1744 neighborhood skirmish. He and his wife appear to have lived in Lancaster County, PA. - though they had land in Cumberland. He died before 1755 when administration was granted to his wife Mary in Lancaster Co., PA - then the wife of John Brown. Children of Joseph shown in his estate distibution: George, Adam, Susannah and Jane.
Although Hugh, Thomas, Willliam of Dauphin Co., and other Carnahan families may have lived in Pennsylvania in this early time period- I have not been able to directly connect them with these brothers.
I hope this helps.
Linda Hansen
Norm,
Thanks for the update on the "flood" and how it happened. I'm sure it
was an error on the senders part and this computer-illiterate is
understanding of how it might happen. I received my copy of the Book
yesterday and am really impressed with how well it's been put
together. Can't wait to get into it.
I do have one question, though, before we all move on...
Most of those messages we all deleted had a Subject message that I
wanted to investigate...what happened to the body of those messages?
The 'erroneous' message somehow over-rode the message that had been
intended to be posted. Are we now receiving those message as they'd
been expected to be posted or are they now lost?
Also, I must apologize for sometime hitting the "forward" button when
responding to Digest messages instead of cutting-and-pasting a new
message to the Digest (thereby eliminating those irritating repeats
of the original message). I use AOL at home and am not given the
option to 'edit' previous message when I hit "forward" so creating a
new message is the only way to eliminate the repeats.
I hope you know that I'm sure no one on this list expects you to be
"glued" to your computer, Norm, LIFE'S WAY TO SHORT for that!! Gotta
smell the flowers sometimes. I really appreciate your expertise and
willingness to help us all. We need to say Thanks more often and
sometimes it takes a "Flood" to remember how important you and your
role is to what we're trying to accomplish.
Hi Bob,
Nice to hear that you are still here....<g>.
We have been rather quiet recently, haven't we.
Just wanted to check in with you and see if you had been able to visit with
the folks who posted on GenForum about Aaron's family.
Did you find anything new?
Sure wish we could come up with some sort of estate records for that James -
of course, I want the kind that list all heirs and give all sorts of other
specifics....<g>.
Hope springs eternal.....LOL
Thanks and take care - Emma

Rootsweb is a FREE service but it does NOT have infinite resources.
I refer to one line responses that quote an entire message. It doesn't
take long for all those quotes to add up to a considerable amount of
storage.
Remember the list and the board are archived and excessive quoting
adds up fast. It is not an easy task for Rootsweb staff to delete
messages of this type and they have thousands of lists to deal with
besides ours. They don't have the man power either.
It is all to easy to just fire off a one-liner and not bother to
delete the quoted material that isn't needed in most cases.
You can set your email client to not quote the message at all. That
way you can select what you want to quote and not send the whole thing.
Here's a rule of thumb for quoting messages. If the quote is LONGER
than your message you have quoted too much.
OK, while I'm on my soapbox I'll add this: IF you are replying to a
digest PLEASE change the subject line to the message you are
actually replying to. Just cut and paste it in. If someone searches
a thread in the archives your message will be missed because your
subject line doesn't match the thread.
It is impossible to calculate how much time I've spent reading
replies to [CARNAHAN-L] Re: CARNAHAN-D Digest V-- #-- only to find
they don't apply to my research.

I see you are searching for information on the Carnahan Clan. This may be of help to you in your search. We can now accept credit card payment. See below.
CARNAHAN
A fellow researcher and I have published the book on Carnahan Clan history and genealogy. Volume 1 is here. It is 520 pages and hard cover. A welcome addition to your library.
This book is a result of many years of research. It is a book of history and facts. Volume 1 contains the history of the Clan from Adam to Cearnacháin (the old Gaelic spelling). The Chief Herald of Ireland has acknowledged the research and the Clan is now registered as the great clan that it was in Ireland.
Find out where they lived? What they did? Where they went? This book is the result of extensive research of ancient texts of Ireland. Carnahans have always been a clan that kept their business to themselves, making research difficult, but not impossible. This is one of the reasons a book such as this has never been published. The research was costly and very time consuming. We have self published the book so it is a limited number printing. Don’t get left out. We are mailing the book to purchasers now.
Go to www.carnahanranch.com and click on the genealogy page for details.
Or you can email me, Bess Carnahan, co-author of the book, carnahanranch(a)scottsbluff.net
Comments from Carnahan researchers who have bought the book:
This is the first time that all the Carnahan work has been pulled together and published in one publication. Up until now only individual lines have been published. I have been waiting for an endeavor like this for a number of years and eagerly look forward to the whole set. After seeing all the information floating around about the early Carnahans, with nothing to back it up, it’s great to finally see where some of it came from. P. Carnahan, California
I received my copy two days ago. I have not finished reading it all, but I recommend it as a “must have” for any Carnahan family researcher or historian interested in the Carnahan surnama or variations. There is a wealth of information on the clan drawn from many sources and the genealogies are logically laid out. I look forward to future volumes with more history and genealogies. A. Benson, Texas
Book arrived today. Great handling with International mail. Thanks. W. B., Victoria Canada
Cost is $29.95 plus $4.00 S&H – Total $33.95 (continental U. S. S & H International destinations, including Canada is $10.00) Credit card payments acceptable through Ebay’s PayPal (payments to account: carnahanranch(a)scottsbluff.net.) You will not be disappointed in this book. It is nothing like you’ve seen before for Carnahans and is guaranteed to be authentic facts and history. After all, the Chief Herald of Ireland has approved the research and he should know his Irish history.
We would appreciate your forwarding this information to other Carnahans. We want to get the word out to all of the Clan.

Dear Charlene, and all other faithful Carnahan listmembers,
A strange and unacceptable thing happened yesterday, as we all
realize. This list, and the related bulletin board, are for non-commercial
and non-advertising purposes, and for the researcher and sharing of
information directly related to our interest in the history of the Carnahan
families.
The sender posted seemingly thousands of identical messages advertising the
availability of a book about the Carnahan family history, and did so, I
want to believe, out of a lack of understanding how the computer system
works. This was an unprecedented thing, not only for our group, but for
all of Rootsweb.
Spam is spam, no matter what the form or intentions of the "spammer". It
clogged up the inboxes of all of our listmembers, and caused many to
unsubscribe, in desperation, as they were unable to halt the "Johnstown
Flood" of incoming e-mails from her.
Again, I feel sure that the sender did so with no malice aforethought, and
without understanding that she was causing a great problem to everyone.
As it so happened, I was away from my computer most of the day yesterday,
and at the home of a friend, watching the Reagan funeral events. When I
returned home, and signed on, "Wow!"!
Emma Cronin's urgent HELP message quickly called my attention to what was
happening. I went to the Administrator's website and immediately put the
sender's e-mail address on "reject", as a quick way to stop any further
incoming barrages. However, by that time, much of the damage was already
done. Not only did the sender post to the list, but also to the bulletin
board, which automatically links to the list, and caused even more e-mails
to be sent.
The Carnahan Bulletin Board was chock full of the postings, and I began
deleting them, one by one, into the wee hours of the morning. I also wrote
to Rootsweb for urgent help with the monumental task. This morning, the
Rootsweb staff replied and told me that they had been able to erase all of
her messages from the Bulletin Board.
As your Administrator for the Carnahan lists and the Carnahan Bulletin
Board, I apologize for being away from the computer yesterday. Murphy's
Law is alive and well, if anyone ever doubts that. Ordinarily, I would
have been online and/or near enough to the computer to have been able to
stop this early in the game.
Thanks to Emma Cronin for alerting me and Rootsweb about the problem. It
is a matter that also involves Rootsweb and their polcy about
advertising. As soon as I have a talk with Rootsweb about the problem, and
can feel assured that there will be safeguards that we can use to prevent
any such recurrence, I will restore the list and bulletin board to normal
functioning. I feel sure that it will not happen again.
Let me state, for the understanding of everyone ... the use of the list and
the bulletin board is for individual research and sharing only ... no
advertising. As you have seen in the past, I am very reluctant to even post
notices about the reunions ... but, if such notices are to be posted,
please let the Administrator be the only one to do that.
I hope that all those who unsubscribed will consider returning. I also
thank each and every one of you for your very kind understanding.
Best regards, and God Bless you,

I must add my displeasure to the multiple postings (over 190) I received
6/11 which related to the purchasing of the Carnahan book. I already
purchased this book. I place my name on this list in the hopes that I may
find information relating to my line and even get in touch with people
connected to it. Also I sometimes post information to share so that it would
spark someone to help me in my search. This email listing should not be
abused.

An American Heroine
How an American woman, the wife of the American printer at Monterey, carrying
an American flag rushed past the federal outposts and through the rebel
forces, reviled and insulted as she passed and fought her way to the American
consulate seeking a physician for her husband, who had been wounded by a federal

Her husband, J. S. Carnahan, pictured the heroic daring of this frail little
American woman, clinging to her United States flag at a time when the flag of
her country was a signal for attack.
The Carnahans have lived in Monterey for more than fifteen years. They were
both under fire during the two battles at Monterey.
Mrs. Carnahan said they had been forced to surrender their horses and
automobiles when the rebel leader General Gonzales took the city.
Mrs. Carnahan saw the flag of the United States dragged in the mud and torn
by the Banda de Guerra, led by General Massieu, in company with the mayor of
the city and his officers and the governor of the state, Salome Botella who rode
about the town of Monterey proclaiming that the United States was going to
invade Mexico and calling upon all citizens to take up arms against the invaders.
Hi there,
And then I found this as well.
