Hi Darrell,
Here's what I have on Newton.
Newton C. Carnahan - b. 30 Jan 1818 Rutherford Co., Tn
d. 8 Oct 1906 Cannon Co., Tn
md 17 Mar 1841 Rutherford Co., Tn to Permelia Akers
Permelia was born abt 1823 in Kentucky and I show her parents as Meredith Akers and Nancy Jane Thompson.
Permelia apparently died between 1870 and 1878 when Newton married Cynthia Francis Gaither.
Children of Newton C. Carnahan and Permelia Akers:
Nancy Jane - abt 1842
Elizabeth A. - 3 June 1844
James M. - 20 Apr 1846
Sarah E. - abt 1854
Newton - 6 Jan 1858
Andrew A. - 26 Mar 1860
Lorena - 14 Nov 1861
David C. - 6 Nov 1864
Children of Newton and Cynthia Francis:
thomas Basel - 9 July 1879
Hester O. - 26 Oct 1883
I still need to fill in some census records on these folks.
Will send the information from James and Jane Helton later. But it will take me a while to type it in.
Right now I have a flood in my bathroom and bedroom and am waiting for a plumber to get here....<sigh>. In the mean time I am alternating between cleaning up and checking mail.... <double sigh>
As for Jane/Jennie Helton's parents - I don't know them. Have talked with several folks about the Helton's and that family seems to be as hard to tie down as some of ours...<g>.
Take care - Emma

Emma,
You've got some info here that I don't have. And my grandmother was an Aker, so I'm especially interested in Newton C Carnahan and Permelia Akers.
Who is her parents? Do you have dates and and other children for them? Basically, I guess I need your downline from James Carnahan and Jennie Helton if you don't care sharing. Also, who is Jennie's parents?
Thanks so much!

Right LuAna,
These folks have been working for a while to get all the Rutherford County cemeteries photographed and on line.
You might also like to check the Lyon Cemetery.
They have the grave markers for Susan Carnahan, wife of James M. Carnahan.
James M. Carnahan was the son of Newton C. Carnahan and Permelia Akers.
Newton C. Carnahan was the son of James Carnahan and Jane Helton.
James Carnahan was the son of Andrew Carnahan and Elizabeth Billingsley.
Anyway.. the graves of Susan W. Carnahan and their daughter Margaret Carnahan are both in the Lyons Cemetery.

I found Carnahan Cemetery, Rutherford County, TN at USGS which gave the coordinants:
USGS 7.5' x 7.5' Map: Readyville
Latitude: 354851N

My understanding is that the Carnahan cemetery has been accounted for according to TN GenWeb cemetery project headed by Teresa Ghee Elliott but has not yet been photographed. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~rutherfordcemetery/Eastern.html

Hi Everyone,
Just an FYI.
I don't know if any of you have been having the same problems but when I use
the URL included in the messages gatewayed from the Carnahan Message Board I
get an error message. This has been going on for a couple of days.
However, if you just go to the board itself you can read the message.
Not sure what the problem is. Have contacted Ancestry and will see what they
say.
But just thought I would let all of you know just in case you are having the
same problem.
Take care - Emma

Hi LuAna,
There are several possibilities on this one.
Some of these answers will need to be searched in records in Rutherford County.
But... Andrew died in 1839 and Tillotson's book was written in 1933.
My guess... and just a guess mind you is that the George Youree she references in that book is a descendant of William Hart Youree. Am sort of betting that George Youree was the current owner when she wrote the book. Or at least the owner of the farm when this lady knew of them. So it is certainly quite possible that he was buried on the William Hart Youree farm and then that farm was carried down through the family.
Now... as for the Carnahan Cemetery located near the Kittrel School.
That too is possible and the answer may be the same. Again, land records will need to be searched.
If you go back in the mail archives a couple of months or so you will see a message I posted about the Kittrel School with a link to a picture. The folks in that picture are descendants of Andrew thru his son James.
Andrew Carnahan was probably buried on a farm. It is quite possible that in later years a cemetery did get put at that same place by descendants of Andrew. It is also possible that the location of that cemetery was once part of land owned by the Youree family.
Again, only be searching land records would we learn that for sure.
The Tillotson book was representative of things in 1933.
The book you have represents things as of when it was published.
But it is more than possible that both are talking about the same location.
Hope this helps a bit.

Emma,
Good to hear from you again, cousin. I was told there is a Carnahan Cemetery located 3/4 of a mile SE of Kittrel School and near Cripple Creek in a field and 20 or more fieldstone markers. In this cemetery lies Andrew Carnahan, Rev. War Soldier, b. 7-11-1762, d. 5-9-1839. Born in Baltimore County, Maryland. This info comes from the "Rutherford County Tenn.Cemeteries Vol.II, Eastern Third of County, prepared by the Stones River Chapter, S.A.R. and Rutherford Co. Historical Society, in 1975.
This is getting confusing, smile. So now what? Do you think this 1975 book might be more accurate?
I also have from another source that it was William Hartt Youree's farm (not George Youree) of Readyville where the Carnahan Cemetery was. He was the son-in-law of Andrew Carnahan, married to Mary Polly Carnahan.

Bob - I am sorry that I took so long to respond. We can date this by the
man's beard. This is called "chin hair" and was popular right around 1860.
So this was taken around then. ("Chin hair" is a clean shaven face and a
beard growing from under your chin - I am still wondering why they thought
this looked good!) I hope that helps. Linda

Hi Charolette,
I was guessing there based on the approx. b. date for Mary Ann Taylor. In
the 1850 census she is shown as 1 year old.
I agree - I think it was Benjamin F. Carnahan - son of Adam Carnahan who died
in Corinth, Mississippi.
And then there was also Benjamin J. Carnahan, son of John Carnahan and Phoebe
Johnson. He too was in Arkansas.

That's a good question Charolette,
I should have asked that in one of my messages.
All I know is that he disappeared sometime between around 1845 and 1848.
Sorry I didn't ask that.

Hi Darrell,
Charolette just reminded me about this.
Benjamin Young Carnahan - son of John Carnahan and Jane/Janet Billingsley isn't the one who died in Cornith, Ms.
At least it would appear that way.
Benjamin F. Carnahan - son of Adam Carnahan and Rebecca Landers died in Corinth, Mississippi in 1864.
Could these have gotten mixed up or can you help us with info. on the death of Benjamin Young Carnahan.
Thanks and take care - Emma

And now for Green S. Carnahan - son of Benjamin Young Carnahan.
He too is rather interesting.
In the 1860 census he is in Marion Co., Arkansas listed as age 24, farmer, b. Arkansas. He is living with the James M. Davidson family.
Then... in 1870 he is in Beat #5, Lamar Co., Texas in this listing:
Mackey, W. R. - 40 - farmer - Ala
M. E. F. - 33 - keeping house - Tn
Prescott, J. F. - 17 - Tx
Wright, W. J. - 15 - Tx
L. P. - 14 - Tx
L. F. - 12 - Tx
Nixon, A. B. - 8 - Tx
T. G. - 4 - Tx
Roberson, Elizabeth - 26 - SC
Carnahan, G. S. - 34 - widow - farmer - Ark.
Note that he is listed as widow.....
Then in 1880 he is in Precinct #6, Lamar Co., Texas
Carnahan, Green S. - 44 - md - farmer - Ark-Tn-Tn
Arminda - 38 - wife - md - housekeeping - Ala-Ky-Ky
Jo. D. - 6 - son - s - Tx-Ark-Ala
William A. - 3 - son - s - Tx-Ark-Ala
Rosa Ann - 8/12 - Oct - daughter - Tx-Ark-Ala
1900 - Census - Precinct #6, Lamar Co., Texas
Carnahan, Green - head - Oct 1835 - 64 - md 30 yrs - Ark-Tn-Tn - farmer
Arminda P. - wife - Jan 1841 - 58 - md 30 yrs - 7/4 - Ala-Ky-Ky
And in 1910 in Precinct #6, Lamar Co., Texas
Carnahan, William - head - 32 - md1 - 0 yrs - Tx-Ark-Ala - farmer
Ema - wife - 20 - md1 - 0 yrs - Tx-Mo-Ark
Green - father - 74 - div - Ark-tn-Tn - farm laborer
1910 - 3 rd ward, Paris, Lamar Co., Texas
Echols, Fate - head - 51 - md1 - 29 yrs - Tn-SC-Va - operates elevator crate factory
Dora - wife - 49 - md1 - 29 yrs - 7/5 - Tx-Ala-Ala
Ray - son - 20 - s - Tx-Tn-Tx - ???? crate factory
May - daughter - 17 - s - Tx-Tn-Tx
Rose Ella - daughter - 12 - s- Tx-Tn-Tx
Vida - daughter - 10 - s - Tx-Tn-Tx
Carnahan, Arminda - mother-in-law - 71 - wd/d - Ala-Ala-Ala
Apparently Arminda first indicated widow and then changed it to divorced.
Now... this census brings up lots of questions.
The 1900 census shows this Dora as being born in Nov 1860. Green Carnahan was in Missouri in 1860 and not married. So I figure this Dora was a daughter of Arminda by a 1st marriage.
Does anyone know who Green Carnahan might have married 1st?
