Thank you. I should have thought of that. Since we're on the subject - the Carnahans have a lot of military men - Captains, Majors and Colonels (like yourself). Is the order of rank: 1st Lt, 2nd Lt, Captain, Major, Colonel? Ar there any other ranks in between? It may help us to sort them out.

Most Captains started out as 2nd Lieutenants (and still do).
I am a retired Colonel, so you have it on good authority.
Hi John. You've got a famous name! I don't know. What is your earliest
Carnahan ancestor? I am starting to research this SC group because I see
some ties to the Cumberland County, Pennsylvania Carnahans and I would like
to explore that a little. Linda

Hey Phil,
Was relooking at this family tonight and something dawned on me. I show 7
children for Walter Elmer Carnahan and Betty Prince. You found 6 in
California. Could that mean that the 1st child, Robert Carnahan b. 3 May
1950 was not born in California. So perhaps Walter and Betty were married in
Arkansas????
Hope this makes sense - take care - Emma

Carol - It sure looks to me like this would be Adam, son of Adam Carnahan and Ruth McElwaine. This Adam was supposed to be born in 1816 - pretty close to your census age. If they are living next door to each other in Mercer County, Pennsylvania - it would make sense. I have Adam's 1st wife's name as Elizabeth Moore - since he married Mary Jane at about age 30 - I would suspect that she is his 2nd wife.
The ancestors of Adam Carnahan who married Ruth McElwaine:
Adam Carnahan b. 1741 m. Agnes Jack son of
James Carnahan b. 1719 m. Hannah Power son of
James Carnahan b. 1692 m. Margaret Janny
The Capt. James Carnahan that they mentioned who drowned in the Allegheny River was the son of James Carnahan who married Hannah Power. Capt. James (who drowned) was the father of James who was the President of Princeton.
I hope this has helped.

Hi,
My great great grandfather was James Carnahan who married Rosana McCormick.
Rosana was born in Mercer City, PA. on Mar. 4, 1809. James was born about
1807 in PA. Don't know where. They had 1 children that I am aware of:
Jane, Elizabeth, Adam, Nancy, Archibald, Andrew, William, James, Joseph (or
Josias), Cornelius (my great grandfather) and Margaret. Does this ring any
bells? Gloria (johnware2(a)aol.com) Would appreciate any help.

Carol - I want to make sure I have this right.
You have Adam Leander Carnahan b. about 1862 has brother James age 26 in 1880 census (b. 1854)
sons of Adam and Mary Jane (McClaren) Carnahan m. 1846 - This Adam died before 1880 in Ohio
Adam age 32 (born 1818) and Mary Jane were living in 1850 (Mercer County?) Pennsylvania next door to Adam and Ruth Carnahan. That Adam age 72 - so born about 1778 - do I have it right?

So confusing when they reused samename over and over.

my gr grandfather was adam leander carnahan. Married to Nancy Ellen Urich, his parents were Adam and Mary Jane, but I thought her last name was McClaren, then his father was Adam married to Ruth McElwain. This is what I have come up with but now not so sure since I see the name Mary Jane Miller. Can you shed any light on this?

Carol - Do you have any dates? Generally, if you are looking at an ancestor named Adam Carnahan back at least 150 years you are looking at a descendant of James Carnahan and Margaret Janny of Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. Their sons each had a son named Adam - and so on - and so on . . .
A warning though - if you are following this thread - some of the information given here on Adam Carnahan and Ruth McElwain is not correct.

Do you have any info on this?

I think there is some confusion here. I have never seen John who married Rebecca Carothers referred to as 2nd Lt. As far as I know on deeds, he was always listed as Capt. John Carnahan. This John Carnahan lived in South Huntingdon Township, Westmoreland Co. "John's" in the near vicinity are John Carnahan Esq., his uncle; John Carnahan, his cousin; and John Jack Carnahan his nephew.
Hope this helps.

Hi everyone. I am currently working on the Carnahan family of South Carolina in the 1700's and early 1800's. I would love to hear from anyone who has information on this line. Linda
Good question........
HILL could have been a first marriage. She did name her second son William
McFarland.
I don't know anyone who has tried to find out who Nancy was.
