Hi Darrell! There is something confusing about this one. James Carnahan son of James Carnahan and Hannah Power was married to Hannah Mahon. When he drowned in the Allegheny River in Westmoreland County, Hannah was named administrator of his estate. She outlived him and married again. He didn't have a second wife.
I know you are keeping a database of all Carnahans. Which Carnahan do you descend from?

Hi everyone,
I've ran into a stone wall in connecting my ancester James Patrick Carnahan b: 1797? Co. Downs Ireland d: 4 Aug 1881 in Wythe Co. VA and his siblings: Samuel from either New Youk or Philadelphia PA and Archibald? in Ohio. The following are from Clay Co. KY court records of James son Robert Carnahan: It is written as on the document:
"Robert Carnahan. Manchester, Ky. May 6, 1898.
I was born in Wythe County, Va., January 23, 1832. My father
was James Carnahan. He was born in County Down, Ireland
in 1805 and died in Wythe County, Va. in 1879. He came to
America when 20 to 24 years old, He was 11 weeks and 3 days
on the voyage. He landed at either Philadelphia or New York,
where he had a brother in the mercantile business who offered
to furnish him a stock of goods to go into business but he
wanted to see more of America before locating. He went west
as far as Ohio and thence to Wythe Co., Va., where his brother
John lived. Here he located and in a short time he married
to Mrs. Mary Alford, nee Miss Mary Lavender of Wythe County.
Her father came from England.
2298
Her mother was a Virginian, a very pious woman. I have often
heard her in secret prayer. My mother has a child by her
first marriage, Thomas Alford. He was a devout Christian.
My grandmother and my mother and father and Thomas Alford
were all Methodists, members of the M.E. Chuch, South.
Thomas removed to the State of Ohio where he died. He was
born in 1822. He died about 1872. I had a letter from him
in his last illness, requesting an answer in ten minutes
after I received it. I replied but received no answer. He
was dead. My father held family prayers in his absence my
mother officiated at these services. She was a most devout
Christian. There were born to my father and mother children
as follows: The oldest was Amelia Ann (Stook), Isabel
(Barnett,), Alexander who died of Typhoid fever when 19.
I was next, James, Elizabeth (Farris), Margaret (Freeman),
Mary (Frazier). James lives now at Goose Creek furnace. He
married Martha Bundy of Clay Co., she died in 1897. My
father had no
2299
correspondence with his brother, Samuel I think in New York
or Philadelphia and I knew nothing of him. He had another
brother who lived in Ohio whose name was Archibald, I think.
I do not know what part of Ohio he lived in. My father kept
no correspondence with him and I knew nothing of him. My
father reported his brothers in fine circumstances when he
visited them. His brother John had a fine farm on New River
Wythe County and was in good financial condition. He had
a son, Samuel, in Abingdon, Va. in the mecantile business,
had a saddler shop, a vineyard and was estimated to be worth
950,000 was a bachelor. He had another son, Thomas, who live
in Tazewell County, Va. He was a physician and in find
circumstances. He wanted to take me and give me a medical
education but my parents objected. I was anxious to go.
I was not more than 12 or 15 years old at that time. He had
another son, Newton, who married a Miss Coffey and died.
My sisters located in Wythe Co., Va. after their marriages.
When I was about
2300
21 years old I joined the Methodist Episcopal Church. South
and shortly afterwards was converted. I thought I was con-
verted before I joined the church but I received as much
greater blessings later that I doubted it. When I was married
to Miss Jane Kenzie when I was 19 years old, 1851 in Wythe
Co., Va. Three boys and one girl blessed our union but all
are dead. I was conscripted into the Army of the Rebellion
in 1861 in the fall. I was in the 51st Va. Infantry. Col
Trigg, Col. Wade later. My Captain was Joseph Scalec, a
graduate of West Point. He had a brother in the same company,
a Lieutaenant, also a graduate of West Point. We were sent
to Kentucky under Humphrey Marshall. I was in hearing of
the Perryville fight. We retreated south, Marshall's Army
up Big Sandy Valley to Tazewell. Went to Richmond, Peters-
burg, Sufflok. We had various skirmishes. We then went to
Knoxville, then to London Bridge thence by Chatonooga to
Tullahoma. Then we were ordered back to Knoxville, Tenn
Thence we were ordered to Chicamenga and when we reached
Hiawassa River
2301
several of us concluded that we had had as much of was as
we wanted and concluded to leave the Confederacy to its fate.
Thirteen of us started at the same time, but we scattered.
I went back by way of Knoxville leaving the city half a mile
and crossed the river just above the town. After crossin the
river we passed two forage wagons with 25 or 50 men with them.
We were within 80 Yards of them. We had on our grey uniforms
but they took no notice of us. At Clinch Mountain three men
came running out of a house with gheir guns, calling us to
halt. A man named Beery Wharf was my comrade; we begged off
telling them we were deserters and were going home. Before
the war I had removed to Scott Co., Va. Thither I went. I
found my wife and little daughter there. Three of my children
had died before I went to the army. I was arrested by some
Union soldiers who had made a raid on Scott Co. from Tenn.
and took me to Rogersville, Tenn. and made me take the oath
of allegiance to the U.S.
2302
The Rebels were picking up all the deserters and I found
that I could not stay at home and not wanting to fight any
more I came to Clay County, Kentucky. A cousin of mine
named Robert Baily and a man Robert Hill were with me. We
were headed for William Bishop's formerly of Scott Co. Va.
who died on Sexton's Creek, Clay Co. about the end of the land
near Roark's mill, we met old man Gabe Price. He asked us if
any of us wanted to work. I answered him that I did. I went
back with him. He lived where Mrs. Esther White now lives.
I worked on the farm. It was in the month of December 1863.
I worked for Mr. Price six or seven months then went back
to Virginia but could not stay as the Rebels still had the
country. I returned to Clay County and worked for Dickinson
and Gibson, salt workers six years. I found that my wife
had betrayed me, she was endiente. She acknowledges all.
She was a bright woman. After the war was over I went to
Scott County, Virginia and sued for a divorce, obtained it.
My
2303
wife died a short time after she was divorced. I left my
daughter with her mother and sent her money. She died two
years later.
In 1868 I was married to Naomi Byrley of Clay County. In
1869 I bought a farm in Knox County and removed to it.
There in 1870 my first child was born, William. In 1879
I removed to present place of residence having bought land
of General T.T. Garrard, a part of the James Monroe tract
which Daniel Garrard bought of the ex-President. I have six
sons, no daughters. When I came to Clay County in 1862,
the lands on Green Briar and Rader's Creek could all have been
bought at 50 cents per acre. It was nothing worth. There
were but two houses on Green Briar and none on Rader till
Ponder's was reached near the head of the Creek. I know
Michael Horton's relatives in Scott County, Va. They were
good people. Two of his relatives were local Methodist
preachers, father and son. The father's name was Daniel,
I think. He was a
2304
good preacher. There was very little Methodist preaching
when I came to Clay Co. When I forst came to Clay Co. Over-
ton Azbill a Campbellite preacher used to preach in the old
courthouse. He also taught a single school. There was no
S. School. There were two other Azbills, James and William,
who used to preach there also, Campbellites. While I worked
at the salt furnace, Prof. Harris, Mrs. Judge Dickinson,
Dr. Manning and a Prof. Tany taught shool in the Seminary.
Prof. Tandy was a Campbellite preachr and married James
White's daughter Jennie."
I would appreciate any help in tieing these siblings together.

Not really Marie and I wish I did. Apparently he was a bit of a "rake". Is that a good word? Anyway, have had a bit of a hard time finding out anything. I do know that they did not live together for a time. I have been searching for him on the census and did find a possibly candidate but have still not found her on any census yet. Correction, I do have them as a family in 1900 in Carter Co., Missouri but have not found them in the 1910 or 1920 yet. And... then I have their marriage record as listed in the family bible.
Sorry - Emma
