Hi Linda
She was born around 1815-1816 I believe in Ireland. I have found her marriage
date and births of the children, but not her actual DOB or DOD. Not sure where
she died, I would presume Ayrshire, but who knows! Her married name was
McEvoy, also listed as McAvoy sometimes.

Message Board Post:
I've been following all of the Carnahan postings for ages, but have never seen anything about a Joseph Carnahan. My great grandfather was born about 1844; married Caroline Shaffer who was born in White Twp., Indiana, PA. I believe that they lived with their 3 daughters in Johnstown, PA, during the Johnstown Flood in 1890. Anyone know anything about Joseph?
To all you Carnahan Researchers:
Carnahan is an ancient Irish name, being mentioned in the Annals of the Four
Masters from 800AD. They had connections with Scotland from the beginning,
in the area roughly defined as a beltway in the lowlands from Glasgow to
Aberdeen.
Originally from the Northwest area of Ireland around Donegal.
They did come from Ireland AND Scotland. But the name is definitely Irish,
Cearnachain, meaning Victorious. It has been spelled and respelled various
ways.
They were in Antrim, Leitrim, Legoniel, etc.
I am looking for John & Fanny, parents of Thomas b 1783 in Dauphin County
PA, moved to Erie Co., then Ohio.
John would have been born @ 1750 in Ireland, Scotland or even US. It is
believed he was born in Ireland. Need Proof.
Be careful of the James Alexander connection. There is much in the various
records of researchers attaching any Carnahans to James Alexander. I have
NOT been able to find any definite mention of James Alexander in Scotland.
Appreciate any info. I will be going to Sale Lake City next month to do some
serious searching.
Bess Carnahan

I am working on the early origins of the clan as well as trying to find out
about the Johns, James, etc. of which there were many, all contemporaries.

That's interesting. I only discovered this Sarah Jane last week, and I have
since seen a lot more Carnahan's in Scotland, so maybe Sarah Jane's immediate
predessors were Irish but before that maybe were Scottish!
Any idea what part of Scotland they came from? This Sarah Jane was married and
had her children in Ayrshire.

Charmaine - The information I have is that these Carnahans were from County
Antrim, Ireland. Some records say Legoniel. Legoniel is a townland in
Shankill parish near Belfast.
I haven't done much research in Ireland - but I understand that the
Carnahans were only there about 2 generations and that previously they did
come from Scotland.

Emma - I have some more information on Hugh Carnahan - I am getting more
optimistic that we can place him in this family. I had never seen any
records of him in Pennsylvania until recently - I found a record of him in
Ben Franklin's paper that there was an undelivered letter for him in the
postoffice in Philadelphia.
I haven't seen Hugh in Cumberland County records yet - but I am looking for
him and I think he will probably tie in somewhere.
Are you descended from the Pyatt family, too? I saw some information on
them in one of the record books of Cumberland Co. Linda

HI Linda,
Thanks so much for the wonderful information. My Carnahan folks are supposed
to link up with these folks (I think). But... I have never seen any actual
documents that show this. Am hoping that you might have run across
something.
Andrew Carnahan was born in 1762 in Baltimore Co., Maryland and died 1839 in
Rutherford Co., Tennessee.
His parents were Hugh Carnahan and Mary ????. One theory is that Mary's
maiden name was Finley. Another suggestion is McKinley. And... then I am
sure there are a few others... <g>.
Hugh is thought to have been born in Scotland abt 1730.
The theory is that Hugh is the son of James Alexander Carnahan b. abt 1709 in
Scotland and died abt 1790 in Cumberland Co., Pa.
Does any of this fit with what you have.
Thanks so much - Emma
I have had questions in my mind as to whether Adam Sr. actually existed - I found this record yesterday:
History of Adams and Cumberland County page 260 (974.84H2h) re: Shippensburg
"In February 1763, Mr. Shippen began to issue the first deeds or leases to purchasers, and to those who had previously settled upon the lots. The list of the original purchasers with the number of the lot is as follows:
82. Adam Carnahan
136. John Carnahan "
Then on page 265 -"A brewery was started at a very early day in the building now known as the Black Bear Hotel. This building was erected for that purpose, and the business of brewing was carried on there for a number of years; at first by Adam Carnahan and afterward by James Brown." (It was called the Black Bear sometime "as early or prior to 1792.")
John is mentioned as having lived near Shippensburg as early as 1748 in the minutes of the Middle Springs Church Records: Dec 28, 1748 - "James Paxton being called solemnly declared that he was at Shippensburgh at the time above referred to...The Depont. further adds that having heard it was reported that John Carnachan should have seen said Hannah and said Morrow in an unseemly posture together, he spoke to said Carnachan about it, who told him he was willing to take his oath he saw no such thing." (John's brothers - William and Joseph, are also called in to the Middle Springs Church Court for a brawl they had with others in 1744/45))
I believe these two (Adam and John) are the sons of James Carnahan/Marg't Janny as their brothers, William, Joseph and James live nearby in Hopewell Township.
There are no other Adams of an age to be buying property in 1763 with the exception of Adam, son of James, b. 1741 who as far as tax records show was a freeman (single man no property) in Cumberland County until 1769.
I also have records of Col. John Carnahan (I believe same John as above) who married Eleanor Jack and resided in Huntingdon, Westmoreland Co. From deeds and Eleanor's estate records - the following are their proven children: Elizabeth (?) m. Benjamin Lodge, Margaret m. John Johnston, William Thompson Carnahan b. 1770 (the baby of the family), James who married Catherine Potter, John, and Adam b. before 1763 (probably the Adam who married Mary Thompson and moved to Chillicothe, Ohio - more research needed.)
Re: Elizabeth Carnahan who married Clement Finley - Clement Finley named his brother-in-law John Carnahan as the executor of his will. In Orphan's Court, Westmoreland County in 1786 - Col. John Carnahan came to help settle the estate. From this information I believe Elizabeth also to be the daughter of James/Marg't Janny.
I hope this is of help to you. Please let me know if you have further information that would help me with these lines. I appreciate your insight and help. Linda
Linda, Yes there is alot of interest. Please post it. Patricia Carnahan

I found some new information on Adam Carnahan Sr. and John Carnahan, both of Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania this weekend at the Salt Lake Family History Library. I am still working on it, but I think it may clear up some of the confusion about these two brothers. If there is interest, I will post it - Thanks - Linda
