Phil,
I would love to participate in building your database. As soon as I can
get unpacked (just returned after several
out-of-town trips), I will look through the death certificates I have
for CARNAHAN's and send you the info in text
format. Looking forward to helping all CARNAHAN researchers.

Part 1, The original request.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Hi All,
Way back on 7 Oct 1998 I received the following from
"Donna L. and Tony R. Stieber" <dstieber(a)spiralcomm.net>.
>I mentioned to Norm about possibly setting something up
>with researchers as to what verification they have and
>copies of documents. That way, all the duplication of
>effort would be >eliminated. Focus could be put on
>documents that have not been researched or requested.
>Its just a thought.
I have built a database to store information about documentation on
CARNAHAN families and their descendants. What I propose is that
you send me the citations for your documentation for your research
of your CARNAHAN descendents. I don't want copies of the actual
documents, just what they are, what they contain, where they came
from, and if you would be willing to share copies with other researchers.
I plan on using the book, "Cite Your Sources" by Richard S. Lackey as the
format for making up this database. It seems to cover just about every form
of documentation. I realize there will probably be some documentation that
doesn't conform to what is quoted in this book, and I will deal with
that as it arrives.
If you would be willing to share your documentation with others, please
indicate so by return e-mail to: Phil Carnahan <pcarna(a)pacific.net>.
I'm looking forward to hearing from all of you.
Part 2, The documentation.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Building the necessary forms for this database was/is a harder job than I
thought. I'm still not sure I have it right, but I think I am ready to start
receiving data.
Since there are so many different kinds of documents, I'd like to receive
them one kind at a time, if you don't mind. I'd like to start out with a
bang and start with death certificates.
The form I put together includes name, date of death, place of death,
married or single, birth date if included, age in years, months, days,
fathers name and place of birth, mothers name (maiden)and place
of birth and last but not least, place of burial or removal and where
you got the document from.
It would be easier for me if you could send the information in text
format rather the one of the word processor or spreadsheet formats.
I plan on printing a copy as well as saving a copy to disk for archiving
off site. I plan to do the data input manually. I know it will take much
longer this way, but with all the different documents and the different
information included with each, formatting it a certain way will be just
as hard for you as it would be for me to make corrections to
automatically import the data.
Please flag your messages with the subject I used (Carnahan Document
Database) so they will be readily apparent to me. If you would like to
send the information as an attachment, I can receive them that way as
well as in the body of an e-mail message.
Once again, thanks for concidering submitting your document data for
inclusion to this database.

Hi Peggy,
In an earlier e-mail to me you mentioned that your James, his
younger brother Joseph and their parents were found on a MI.
census. Can you tell me which census this was and what the
particular info included was? I have completed transcriptions
on the 1880, 1900, and 1920 soundex for Oregon and have
found a number of Josephs listed. The problem is that most
of them are much older than your James. And none of them
were shown as being born in Michigan. I did another search
for any Joseph born in Michigan, but found none.
We know, from information I believe I sent to you earlier, that
James was in Arkansas in 1900, Texas in 1910, Louisiana in
1911, back to Texas in 1913 thru 1915, then to Louisiana in
1920. The above dates and places coming from census and
birth data for his children.
Since you have a birth place for him and what sounds like
a first census appearance, why not try and trace his parents
after that first census to see if you can determine where they
went and where and when they died? If you can find out their
death dates and places, perhaps you can obtain copies of
their obituaries, which might give you more information on
your elusive James. I use obits as a second form of census
for children who were born after the 1920 census. That is if
they are nice enough to include their names and where they
were living at the time of the event.
Being a man who moved around a lot is going to make it
much more dificult to keep track of James. We have the same
problem with preachers who moved from church to church.
Don't give up the search. The answer is out there somewhere.
It's just not where you have looked yet. And that could be a
clue also. Which areas have you searched in and what items
have you looked for?

Hi Joan, and anyone else who might be looking for Carnahan's from Indiana Co, Here is what I have so far, let me know if we share the same names. If not I'll write to Phil. Thanks for the info.
Samuel Carnahan b. abt: 1785 in Ireland
died between 1860 & 1870
(according to the census, I just recently found him)
married: Catherine b. abut 1809 in PA
died after 1870
children: Joseph b.1834, Margaret b.1842, Martha b.1843, James b.1846, Jackson b.1848, and Luther or Luthern (not sure, his name has changed to Louis in more recent census and marriage license of his daughter)
Luther or Luthern b. abt 1850
married:Amanda b. abt. 1857 in PA (both her parents are from PA but I don't know who they are yet)
A. Louis (Luther) is my 2nd g.grandfather his children are:
Andrew J. b. 1875, Anneta b. 1876, Emma J. b. 1877, and Catherine.
( I couldn't make out her age in the census, she might have died young.)
Sarah Catherine Carnahan:
born: 1879
married: Edward Clark Brilhart
she is my g. grandmother. And one of my brick walls LOL.
She was married in Homer City, Indiana Co. PA and according to her marriage application she just listed A. Louis as a parent. I have no idea what the "A" stands for, but maybe it's Andrew since he has a son by this name.
I found all these Carnahan's in West Wheatfield twp. Indiana Co. PA
Thanks again for any help you can give me.

I have neither Roy nor Catherine in my database. Roy's father's or
grandfather's name might help.
Also, write to Phil Carnahan. He has an extensive Carnahan database.

I am looking for Roy Calvin Carnahan that was born in Chicago, IL in the late 20's. He married Catherine Woods in Florida and divorced in 1963. They had one child named after a Family member by the name of William. Roy lived in New Jersey and Florida also. He has two other sons by the name of Patrick and Wayne I think.
William had three sons and one daughter also named after Family members (Andrew, Elizabeth, Robert and Thomas).
Looking to complete the Carnahan family tree.
Thanks
Hi Karen,
In order to search my database, I will need more information than
they move to Illinois in the 1930's. Can you provide any more
information about the vital dates for your grandmother, Ada Carnahan
and her son Charles Carnahan? Both are very common names in the
Carnahan lines which making searches much more difficult. Do you
know what Ada's maiden name was? Who was the wife of Charles?
If you can provide any of the above, I'd be more that happy to share
anything that I might have on this family.
