Kensington, Md. — Funeral services for Donald P. Carmody, 75, of Kensington, Md., were
held on Sept. 18, 2001, in Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Kensington, and he was buried
with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery. He died Sept. 9, 2001, after a
long illness and complications following cancer surgery.
An infantryman during World War II, he won the Purple Heart when wounded after crossing
the Rhine in March 1945.
Mr. Carmody graduated from Champlain College in Plattsburgh in 1952. He had served as
president of the student government and assisted college and local authorities in the
unsuccessful attempt to prevent closure of the college.
He was married for 49 years to Kathleen Langey Carmody, a Plattsburgh resident and former
editorial staff member of the Plattsburgh Press-Republican. Also surviving are five sons,
Stephen P. and Michael C. of Silver Spring, Md., Dr. Brendan J. Carmody of Potomac, Md.,
Justin of Kensington and Matthew of Hollywood, Calif.; a sister; and seven grandchildren.
Mr. Carmody retired from the U.S. Public Health Service in 1978 and then practiced law for
13 years in Washington, D.C., Superior Court. He and Mrs. Carmody, an alumna of Saint
John’s Academy, Plattsburgh, were both graduates of Georgetown University law school,
Washington.
