Dear Jenny
This is amazing, I never expected to hear from anyone after so much time.
I still haven't found any trace of my Patrick Carmody. not his birth, marriage or
death. All I have is his name on the birth certificates of my grandfather and his three
brothers. Their mother was Mary Jane Loten and we have all her information as after the
birth of my grandfather in 1874 Patrick was supposed to have been killed from a fall from
a horse and at this time they were in Vegetable Creek which is now called Emmaville. Mary
took the four boys back to her father Heber Going Loten in Taree, NSW and it was their
grandfather who had them baptized into the Church of England and changed the spelling of
Carmody to Carmady.
It seems that Mary became involved with a local boy by the name of William Ritchie and
fell pregnant and she went to Sydney leaving her four boys in the care of her father and
two sisters. She struggled to support herself and when it came time to have the baby she
applied to enter the Benevolent Society for the birth. On her entry she states that
Patrick Carmody is the father but that he deserted her and that she had a warrant out
after him. So how can this be if he is dead? Looking at the birth of my grandfather and
his brothers I have worked out that my Patrick Carmody would have been born about 1845 as
her was 29yrs when my grandfather was born in Feb. 1874.
I have always thought that Thomas Carmody might have been his brother as Bathurst is
listed as the birth place of Patrick on all his boys birth certificates.I have been so
convinced that I have bought all of Thomas's certificates. Was Ann Carmody also a
sister to Thomas as she is listed in the registry with the same parents. Also the place of
marriage for Patrick and Mary is stated as Walgett on the 25/11/1866.But no certificate is
to be found.
I have am a bit confused though as to the real surname of Bridget Toohey ? for on
Thomas's death certificate it is Bridget Clarence so was widowed and remarried but no
luck finding this. Then I have the christening of the twins James and Joseph but their
mother was Bridget Doohan but father Patrick Carmody. Then I have the death certificate of
a Patrick Carmody who died in 1931 at the age of 70yrs who's parents were Patrick
Carmody and Bridget Doolan but even though it says this Patrick was never married the
birth year would be 1861 so thats not him.I also have the death certificate of Bridget
Carmody 23/02/1885 who was married to a John Carmody. They had a Patrick but as he was
32yrs at the time of her death he would have been born 1853 so that is too late for it to
be my Patrick. I still lean towards him being a brother to your Thomas as they were born
in the 1840's and married in the 1860's Though I don't think that Patrick and
Mary were ever leagally married as her fathe!
r would never have allowed her to marry a catholic and we believe that she ran away with
him and their first child was born 11months later on the 19/10/1867 at Strathbogie a
district of Glenn Iness.
If you can add any information to what I have I would love to hear from you, just e-mail
me direct to my e-mail address relly(a)tpg.com.au
I hope to hear from you soon
PS
I was born Karelle Carmady and my parents were Dudley Keith Carmady and Kathleen Olive
Yarnold both were born on farms in the Taree district. My grandfather and his brothers
remained with their grandfather and aunts as Mary after the birth of a girl in the
Benevolent Society, the child died of Syphilis at 2weeks old. Mary did marry an American
by the name of Edward Griffen and gave birth to another girl on the 29/4/1879 but Mary
died soon after the birth on the 20/5/1879 from Tuberculosis at the age of 32yrs as did
her mother and many of her family. But at least she went before the Syphilis got her
