Message Board Post:
Hi Rob,
I'm hoping you might have info on the children of Mary Carmody and Patrick J. Kohler;
I believe that Patrick was my cousin 3 times removed, the son of Margaret Brennan and
George Kohler. My Patrick was born in Glenelg, Grey, Ontario about 1863. His mother died
in 1870, and he and the younger children stayed with his mother's family in Holland
Twp. for a time.
Patrick is living with his widowed aunt, Catherine Brennan Craig, in 1871, but is no
longer in Grey Co by 1881.
Patrick's father George emigrated to the USA and married at least twice more. He
married Julia Heraley between 1870 and 1880 in Wisconsin, and they had one son, Alexander
(born 1882). Julie died between 1880 and 1890. George married Paulina Stupfel in 1891 in
Wisconsin and had three more children, Frank A, Laura K., and Mary Ida.
I believe Frank A. is buried at Rapid River Cemetery where his older half brother Patrick
J Kohler &family are buried.
The Patrick Kohlers are on the 1900 census of Masonville, Michigan. Patrick is born
Canada in Apr 1866 to parents born in Canada. He's a section foreman. Wife is Mary,
born Mar 1872 in Wisconsin to Irish parents. Married 7 years. 4 children born and living.
Children are Margaret (6), Mary (4), Ester (3), and George (2), and sister in law Hannah
Carmody (20) is living with them.
Patrick is on the 1910 (taken 12 May 1910) census of Masonville with the same children
(plus 1 more), but it's bewildering.Patrick's wife is age 43, first marriage for
both of them, married 16 years--but her name is Eleanor and she's born in Illinois to
German parents rather than in Wisc to Irish ones. Children are Mamie (14), Maggie (13),
Arthur (10), Esther (6), and Charles (3).
According to the cemetery records, Mrs Kohler died 30 May 1910, so she was alive when the
1910 census was taken. I don't know if Eleanor was a nurse, cousin, etc., who was
mistakenly listed as wife.
