Julia, my great grandmother, Mary Carmody Neville, was a sister of James Carmody's. He
married Mary Therese Dwyer (O'Dwyer) in Emmetsburg, Iowa in 1887 or 1888. Mary was
born in Tipperary, Ireland, in May, 1864, immigrated to the United States in 1887, and
died in 1939 at the age of 73. In the 1895 Iowa Census, James and Mary's children
included Ellen, Patrick, John, and William. In the 1910 U.S. Census, 10 children were
listed in the Carmody household. Mary had given birth to 13 children, eleven of whom were
living. Daughter Mary Rose (later known as "Rose") was living in the town of
Emmetsburg with her grandmother, Ellen Boland Carmody, and her aunt, Nellie Carmody. I
have talked to Rose's daughter, Eileen Hahn, for information about the Carmody's.
She told me that Rose was "treated like a princess" by her grandmother. I guess
that was preferable to living out in the country with all of her brothers and sisters.
Some of the family tree information that was passed on to me from a couple of family
sources--including Eileen Hahn and Bob Saltzer--and information from genealogical web
sites have NOT always been consistent with one another. The fact that much of the 1890
U.S. Census was destroyed by fire leaves a big gap in information from 1880 to 1900.
Also, moving around the United States--depending on where railroads were being built--made
tracing the Carmody's and Neville's difficult. The Diocese of Sioux City, Iowa,
which includes Palo Alto County--was only established in 1902. Sacred Heart Catholic
Church in Ruthven, IA, was built in 1889, and Holy Family Church in Emmetsburg was not in
existence until 1885. Looking for baptismal, marriage, and burial information has been
problematic.
Here is some information that I have on the other siblings:
Ellen Gertrude ("Nellie") Carmody was born in Emmetsburg, IA, 11/6/1889.
In 1910, according to the U.S. Census, she was employed as a milliner. She married Thomas
James Miller, May 24, 1925, in JCrown Point, IN, and died in Chicago, IL, 8/17/1966.
Patrick ("Pat" or P.J.")James Carmody was born 3/23/1892. (I received
a conflicting DOB of 5/22/1891.) Pat served in the army during World War I, and was
injured in the Alsace Lorraine. He married Cora Payton ____/_____/____. He died in
Knoxville, IA, 1/17/1976. (I again have a conflicting date of 1/1/1974.)
John ("Jack")Vincent Carmody was born April 16, 1892 (1893?) and died
May,1949 (1948?)in Chicago, IL. He served in the hospital corps in Germany during World
War I. Later, he became a cowboy. He was thought to have married a Native American girl,
and to possibly have had a son by her. (This was uncertain.)
William ("Billy") Aloysius Carmody was born June 18, 1893 (0r June, 1894?)
in Emmetsburg, IA. He served in the artilllery branch of the army during World War I. He
fought in the battles of Thierry, Verdun, and the Argonne Forest. He worked for the
railroad; he never married. He died in Chicago, IL, February 28, 1962.
Mary Rose Carmody was born June 6, 1895, in Emmetsburg, IA. Over the years, Rose was
employed as a teacher, a cashier, and a singer. On April 19, 1933, Rose married Fred J.
Hahn (born 9/21/1894; died 11/27/1951) at St.Cyril Church in Chicago, IL. Fred was a
salesman for Dan River Mills. He and Rose moved to St. Louis in the late 1930's with
their two daughters, Rosemary and Eileen. Rose died in St. Louis 1/28/1963, and was
buried at St. Mary's in Chicago, 1/31/1963.
James ("Jimmy") Valentine Carmody--noted as James T. Carmody in the 1910
U.S. Census--was born 12/25/1896, in Emmetsburg. (Per Eileen Hahn, Jimmy had a twin who
died at birth.) Jimmy also served his country in World War I, but was not sent overseas.
He married Ethel Hill ___/____/____ in Carrington, North Dakota. He died there 12/15/
1954.
(I have a conflicting date of death: April, 1952. The Social Security Index says
12/1954.)
Mark Carmody was born in 1900; died in 1901.
Bridget Anastasia Carmody was born November 11, 1899, in Emmetsburg, IA. Like the
other Carmody girls, she eventually moved to Chicago. She married William O'Leary
___/____/_____. William died in Chicago, IL, in April, 1968; Bridget died there December
11, 1986.
Richard Anthony ("Anthony") Carmody was born October 17, 1901, in
Emmetsburg, IA. He died in June, 1946? (I have another note that says he died in
Chicago, IL, December 15, 1952.)
Julia Victorine Carmody was born in Emmetsburg December 30, 1903. It is worth noting
that this was the same night as the famous Iriquois Theatre Fire in Chicago. The
scenery--painted with highly flammable oil paints--caught fire due to the hot stage
lights. Due to non-compliance of the fire codes of the time by the Iriquois Theatre, 600
of the 1900 people in the audience perished. Of the 500 performers and backstage
personnel, only the tightrope artist died.
Julia married Richard DeWitt on December 31, 1925, in Chicago. I don't know if
Bob Salzer left out any information, but Julia's children are all listed with the last
name of McKee. Should her husband's name have been Richard DeWitt McKee?? JULIA,
CAN YOU SHED ANY LIGHT ON THIS?? DO YOU HAVE A MARRIAGE DATE FOR YOUR GRANDMOTHER? DID
SHE HAVE MORE THAN ONE HUSBAND?? Julia died October 23, 1975 (or in 1980, according to
another source.) AGAIN, DO YOU HAVE HER DATE OF DEATH??
Margaret Mary Carmody was born in May, 1906. (I have dates of May 6 and May 11 from
different sources.) On December 24, 1924, she married Amon Pearl ("Tom") Tucker
in Chicago, IL. She died in Chicago on August 17, 1976.
Michael Cornelius Carmody was born October 8, 1908. He served his country in World
War II. He lived with a woman named Georgia _______. Whether or not he married Georgia
was unclear. He died in Pasadena, CA, October 23, 1975.
Hope this helps you, Julia. You can also e-mail me at jcjklein(a)sbcglobal.net.
I hope that you can verify information on your grandmother for me. Thanks!! --
Connie Neville Klein
