I've been searching for information on the Carmodys, and I feel that we might have a
connection. My father Charles Carmody said he had relatives from Bristol VA/TN, which he
visited as a young child. His gr-uncle was Martin Carmody and wife Zona Bell, he worked on
the Southern Railroad. From the records I have obtain Martin was borned in 1877-died 1950.
Martin had two brothers - Micheal (my gr-grandfather) and Joesph Carmody. My father said,
Joseph had three daughters. I think my gr-grandfather Michael could have been the eldest
son listed as James - age 14 on the 1880 census, and his birth name was James Michael
Carmody. I noticed on one of your queries you had listed James as deceased at age 16. I
think you might find this story of some interest regarding my gr-grandfather Michael, it
was told by Martin Carmody .. At the age of 14 Michael Carmody had apparently got in some
kind of trouble, and his father was going to give him a whipping. Instead Michael climb
up a tree an!
d refused to come down. His father then proceeded to cut the tree down with an ax, and
when it hit the ground he (Michael) took off running, and never looking back. Soon
afterward, he married a young woman by the name of Amanda. They had my grandfather James
William Carmody b. Dec. 27, 1881 He did not return to Bristol until much older. Michael
Carmody(died abt. the age of 50 yrs) - 19 is buried in Big Opening Cementary in New
Madrid Missouri, along with his wife. My father is the only survivng child from James
William Carmody.
