Hello, Tom! Thank you for responding. I dont know if the Carmody line (alternate
reditions on various indices: Carmady, Carmacy, Carmerdy, Carmedy) line is the same as
yours, but they were natives of County Clare Ireland. After the Great Hunger (potato
famine 1837-1839) and conditions were so terrible, many patriarchs/matriarchs allowed
their children & grandchildren to leave Ireland, knowing that they would probably
never see them again in their lifetime. Some of these children & cousins landed in
United States at Boston Harbor, or Castle Garden NY (pre-Ellis Island) about 1845 - 1851.
So YES, some of the family did arrive in New York!
Since other siblings & inlaws & cousins worked for RR, and lived/worked closely
with each other, these Carmodys may also have lived in PA, KY, IN, IL, WV, AL and/or TN.
The Dannaher (Danaher) & Dougherty (O'Doherty; Doherty) line were resourceful
& possibly worked as railroadmen, stonemasons, miners, builders, or farmers. Mary
Dannaher (born abt.1830) married Patrick Carmody (born abt. 1820). They both were born in
County Clare.
Patrick & Mary Dannaher Carmody settled in Giles County, TN (Pulaski area). The names
I have are for their children: Michael (born abt.1855 KY), Cornelius (born abt. 1858),
John (born abt. 1859), Margaret (born after 1859, married Patton); Kate (born after 1859,
married Cockrill), and Bridget (born after 1859, married Umensetter). I am still looking
for confirmations...
Other surnames that would be in-laws to Patrick Carmody are: Dannaher, Doherty, Dougherty,
& McKee. If any of the states or surnames listed above look like possibilities, let
me know & I can give more detail. Regards. rom
