George,
You have gathered an impressive amount of information on William
Carmichael and his descendants. I am sorry, but I have nothing further
to add- your data includes everything I had and then some (see Rootsweb
World Connect, file Proudscot, #I6008). Andrew may have immigrated to
NY, then headed to Guilford Co to join relatives or friends around 1779.
I know of one Carmichael family who was in that area in 1779 in nearby
Stokes/Surry Co; they were descended from John Carmichael (#I330) and
wife Ruth Buchanan who arrived in the area about 1750, so perhaps Andrew
was related to them. This Carmichael family left for GA about 1785. Sons
of my immigrant ancestor Duncan Carmichael (#I281)of Halifax Co. VA also
moved to Surry/Stokes Co., but not until about 1810. If you do make a
connection, I would be most interested in hearing about it.
John Carmichael

William Carmichael was supposedly born in New York in the mid 1770's. He
went to Guilford County, North Carolina as a young child with his
father, who was supposedly Andrew Carmichael. Andrew Carmichael received
land grants in Guilford County as early as 1779. William Carmichael
married Lydia Gossett, daughter of Thomas Gossett of Guilford County, NC
by 1800. In 1810, William and his family lived just over the border in
Randolph County, NC. By 1815, we found him back in Guilford County, NC
on the same tax list as Lydia's father, Thomas Gossett. Shortly
afterwards, he moved to Indiana. He is an original entry landowner in
Lawrence County, IN with entries dated 23 Mar 1818. He is next found
owning land and residing in Lost River, Orange County, Indiana. An
1880's era history of Orange County, IN states that William Carmichael
arrived in 1819. He is listed in the 1820 census as residing in Paoli
township, Orange County, IN. William and Lydia Carmichael sell their
Orange County ! land in 1825. By 1826 they have moved to Parke County,
IN, where Lydia dies in 1826 and is buried in the Miller Cemetery in
Parke County, IN at age 50. William Carmichael moved on to Hendricks
County, IN and acquires land there (original entry dated 1827), just
east of Belleville and just south of Clayton, IN. He sells his land to
his son, William Carmichael JR in 1833. This is when William Carmichael
Sr. disappears from the records. It is assumed that he died before
1840. Some children were: 1. William Carmichael Jr, born about 1803 or
1807 in Guilford County, NC. Married Larissa or Laura Lyon (a widow?) on
3 Mar 1843 in Hendricks Co., IN. Died in Liberty township, Hendricks

Odell" is mentioned in his 1869 will.
