Dear Linda,
Linda weren't you originally looking for John and his brother
James,
that came to Calif. with the LDS group?? What is interesting
is that some
of my Carmichaels were in San Benito Co. I didn't Know this
earlier, only
about the Monterey connection. I believe that your people
came to the US
at a later time than my group of Carmichaels, mid 1800s. In
fact I just
found your msg. from about a year ago. I hope it is O.K. to
post maybe
someone out there has information for you. I know how
discouraging
it can be. I still can't find many of my California
Carmichaels.
My family came from Scotland, via Liverpool, on a ship that
was arranged
by the LDS church. It departed on Feb 10, 1852 and sailed for
New Orleans.
As far as we know two (or maybe three) brothers and their
father came together.
Family lore only really talks about the two brothers: James
and John.
The father died on the trip north from New Orleans, somewhere
around
Wayne City, MO and was buried under the tent in which they
were
camping awaiting the wagon train to Utah. After arriving in
Utah
(or somewhere along the way, depending upon which story you
hear) the brothers became disenchanted with the LDS beliefs
and left for
California (under great duress in one story). They settled in
the San Benito
area, it would appear. It is unclear if their wives came with
them from the UK
or they met them here, but there is no information about the
wives at all.
Both brothers had children. James had two sons Albert and
William N. (probably
Nathaniel) and John had two sons John and Nathaniel. William
never married
but the others did and had children.
Albert: sons max and D. Ronald
Nathaniel: sons Ray and David
John : son ? and daughter Gladys
During this time, sometime around the 1875 period, they became
very involved in
the Reorganized Latter Day Saint movement. At the same time,
Albert and
Nathaniel married sisters who were from the Monterey area:
Margaret Chariety
and Nettie May Appleton. Their parents were David and Rachael
Chariety
(Ingrahm) Appleton. In looking for them, I found you.
So....that is how I got
to your area. If you have found anything of interest about
Carmichael's or if
you know anything about Appleton's, please let me know.

Actually, we have corresponded. I am looking for John
Carmichael and wife
and have found them in San Benito. Just want to get more
information about
parents but am only really lurking on this list. Linda
