I am curious about the history of the South Carolina Carmichaels. I am black and my ggg
grandfather was named Peter Madison Carmichael and he was born in South Carolina and
listed as Mulatto on the census. We are not sure who his father was but the family story
definitely states that he was the product of a slave born mother and white Carmichael. He
was obviously very proud of his Carmichael roots, which makes me very curious at what
exactly was the relationship between Peter and his "father." We know that he
was educated because he grew up to become a Methodist Minsiter and could read and write at
a time when most slaves could not. I know that he was born in South Carolina in 1956 but
was shown to be in Texas (Buckners Creek area) in the 1870 census, he was 14 living with
his mother, Celie and two brothers, James and Daniel Carmichael. I would love to know how
they ended up in Texas and who was his father? Upon my research, I believe that he and
his mother was part o!
f Neal Carmichaels family. Any clues or thoughts from anyone?
